Bought an Xbox Elite 2 controller last week, connected it to my PC via bluetooth and started gaming. Realized I wanted to move the X and A buttons on the paddles so I plugged it in to my computer and was prompted for an update. Sure. I updated the controller, re-assigned my chosen paddles, and went back to my Newfound Adventure on FFXIV. Then a day and a half later, the controller started blinking when I turned on my PC. I set to reconnect and it shows up as "Xbox Wireless Controller" now in my bluetooth search instead of "Xbox Elite Wireless Controller" as it had previously. At first I thought nothing of it and went to try to play my game and none of the buttons worked as they should. I then plugged my controller into my PC to check my presets - all good. Unplugged it and back to bluetooth - nothing worked again.
I disconnected my controller and attempted to sync my husband's Elite 2 controller (bought same day last week) and it showed up on my PC correctly as an Elite 2. When he sync'd my controller to his computer is still showed up as "Xbox Wireless Controller." I now have a $180 brick. Please help.
EDIT: It works exactly as it should when plugged in. But that defeats the purpose of a BT controller...

See if you can System Restore to a point before the problem began following this guide: https://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-system-r...
System Restore is your first line of defense and can take you back to a point before a problem began like a time machine. If it doesn't help then you can undo it. Read about it first in the tutorial above and then try restoring to just before this started.
If the problem repeats or System Restore doesn't work then check which Windows Updates were installed at Settings > Update & Security > Windows Updates > Update History, uninstall them there or System Restore again, then immediately check for and block the Updates with the Hide Updates tool explained here which I would install now so it's ready:

Next these same fixes for Xbox Elite controller including if necessary resetting it:

Hi Erin,
you are totally not alone with this error. And let me tell you, its definitly not your system.
My family bought in total three XBox Elite 2 controllers as they were discounted at Amazon (As gifts for eastern).
My wife, my father and I received one. We all three ran into the exact same problem you have. Now that the controller authenticates as generic XBox One controller to our OS it wont work with Steam anymore....
This error is totaly on microsofts side and came with the latest firmware upgrade. As soon as we downgraded our controllers it started working again. Problem is the old firmware has massive bluetooth connection problems. We're quite unsure if we shall wait for a fix or return them...
Greg, if you read this: Please reach out to Microsoft Devs. Or Maybe do some testing yourself, I am convinced you will have the same issues we had.
Best regards,
Joel
