Xbox app on windows 11 not updating!

When I open the Xbox App, it says "Xbox needs an update"... Downloading 95% --- and it shuts down and restart in an never ending loop!!

To precise I'm on Windows 11.

PS: all was working on the widows 10 before the upgrade.

Thanks,

Hi Georges. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, specializing in Installation, Performance, Troubleshooting and Activation, here to help you.

See if these fixes help:

1) Try running the Store Apps troubleshooter at Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other Troubleshooters
2) Check if there's another Update for the App in Microsoft Store app,.

3) If not then try resetting in Windows Settings > Apps > Apps & Features > Xbox Live > Advanced Settings > Reset.
4) If resetting doesn't help then reset the app using all four Options here:

Windows 11 Reset Apps

5) If those all fail then try uninstalling at the above location, restart PC, then reinstall it from Microsoft Store Settings > My Library.

6) If nothing else works then Repair Install Windows 11 with an In-place Upgrade | Windows 11 Forum

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted. If you'll wait to rate whether my post helped you, I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Hi Greg,

Thank you for your prompt response.

Tried all points except for:

2 - the store is updated to the latest, so... no "three dots". Tried the update and the app gets updated but when opened the same thing happens all over again.

6- Repair install will not work I'm already on windows 11 and its aimed for 10!

Nothing has worked event though I have uninstalled, installed and re-register with no success.

I hope there is something else I can do as it seems it is the only app not working and I do not want to Reset my widows with all I have for only 1 app.

Thank you,

Hi Georges.

My apologies, Georges, I have updated the fixes I gave earlier with Windows 11 tutorials now.

If those don't help then next let's Fix the Store:

Here are the latest fixes for Windows 11 Store to try first.

https://clancarousel.com/microsoft-store-not-opening-windows-11/

https://appuals.com/microsoft-store-not-working-windows-11/ (Avoid ad links which intrude into editorial copy, especially avoid Restoro and Reimage ads)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbGiTnCk0ik

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Av1hAL6oOpo

I'll give you everything else possible that works to fix the Store, based on helping to fix it daily for years here. Even if you've tried a step, please do it over in this sequence:

1) Try updating Store apps:

2) Right click on the time and date in the far right corner of the taskbar. Choose Adjust Date and time settings, at the top make sure the time is correct. If it’s wrong, manually adjust it and make sure the sliders for Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically are set to on.

3) Reset the Store app using all four options here: https://www.elevenforum.com/t/reset-uwp-app-to-default-in-windows-11.1174/

4) Type Services in Search box, run Services app as Administrator, open Windows Update Service and Background Intelligent Transfer Service and Stop both. Press “Windows (flag) key + R,” copy and paste C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\ press the Enter button. This folder has all the files related to Windows updates. Open the “Download” folder, select and delete all the files.

Restart Windows Update and Background Intelligent Transfer services in Services app by opening both and choosing Start.

5) Try running the Windows Store apps Troubleshooter in Windows Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Additional Troubleshooters.

6) Type CMD in Search box, Run CMD as administrator, type WSReset.exe and hit Enter. Or in the Search type wsreset.exe select Run as administrator.

7) If that fails to fix the problem go to Windows Settings > Apps > Apps & Features to highlight Microsoft Store, choose Advanced Options, then Reset. After it resets, restart PC.

8) Clear the LocalCache Folder:

Open Run by pressing the Windows key + R hotkey.

Copy and paste %localappdata% in Run and click OK.

Open Packages> Microsoft.WindowsStore_8wekyb3d8bbwe > LocalCache folder.

Press the Ctrl + A hotkey to select all content within the LocalCache folder.

Press the Delete button.

9) Type services.msc in Search box, choose Run as Administrator, from Services tab ensure that Microsoft Store Install Service is started and set to Manual, if not restart PC. Alternative methods to work through the above steps here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WR1fux9Q9O4

10) Run System File Checker and DISM to repair broken System Files: https://www.elevenforum.com/t/use-system-file-checker-sfc-to-repair-system-files-in-windows-11.720/

11) If nothing else works then do a Repair Install, by installing Media Creation Tool, open tool and choose to Upgrade Now. This reinstalls Windows while keeping files, programs and most settings in place, and is also the most stable method to advance to the latest version. https://www.elevenforum.com/t/repair-install-windows-11-with-an-in-place-upgrade.418/

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Hi Greg,

Thank you but o tried all possible combinations without success.

I have also did a repair install and nothing worked.

Ps: I have upgraded other applications and they worked with no issue. It seems to be related only to the "xbox app"!!

Thank you for the support,

Hi Greg,

I have tried the solution you provided and it didn't work :(

I made it work with the following:

1- Removed the XboxApp

2- Created a second user account (Local) and than logged in (profile got created with provisioned Apps)

3- Signed to the store with my Microsoft account and installed the XboxApp.

2- Updated the XboxApp (It worked)

3- Went back to my account re-installed the XboxApp and voilà..

Maybe this will help someone else ;)

Thanks for the support,

Georges,

Thanks for reporting back what worked to help others, Georges!

I'll add to the Apps fixes the Windows checklist which includes a step for trying a new Local Admin account to test for account corruption:
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/for...

Let me know if there's anything else. I'll stay subscribed to this thread in case you need anything else, until the system locks it in a few months.
