Windows XP SP3 Logon Blue Screen Error?

This Blue Screen It Show up sometimes Helpp...!!!

  1. Do you have a good backup (all your files - documents, spreadsheets, music, pictures, bookmarks, emails, installation files, serial numbers/product keys, etc.)?
  2. Do you have installation media and a good copy of your Windows XP product key?

There's a few possibilities - and none of them are good.

Corrupt Windows XP installation due to faulty memory or dying hard drive or faulty motherboard or power supply is the short version.  It could be that since this is a sometimes thing - nothing has been written to disk permanently yet - so it is just happening during a load of the OS (still could be a bad memory stick, bad motherboard, faulty power supply - even a dying hard drive - although that becomes less likely.)

Troubleshooting it would entail testing the memory, the hard disk drive, etc.

Before anything else though - I ask and hint at this again:

  • Do you have a good backup (all your files - documents, spreadsheets, music, pictures, bookmarks, emails, installation files, serial numbers/product keys, etc.)?
  • Do you have installation media and a good copy of your Windows XP product key?

*HINT HINT HINT*

How often is "sometimes" and what do you have to do to get running again?

Can you get the BSOD to happen anytime you want or does it just who up randomly?  If you can get it to BSOD anytime you want,  then if you do some troubleshooting/problem solving and the problem goes away you will know you have fixed it.

That message indicates a problem with your NT File System (NTFS).   In this case, the BSOD information provides some advice that makes some sense - "Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption..."

Usually when one sees that, the system will not boot at all until you boot from some other media and run a chkdsk with error correction (chkdsk  /r) is run to straighten out the file system.  It is curious that it sounds like your system boots okay sometimes and sometime not (is that the case?).

The file system can get corrupted from things like a power interruption, plug pulling, using the power button, an aborted restart, ungraceful shutdown etc.  Have any of those events occurred prior to this incident?

It won't hurt to run a chkdsk with error correction on your system and you can run that from XP by following these instructions:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265/EN-US#method2

Note that running the chkdsk in read only mode will not fix anything but will waste your time so it is up to you if you want to do that part or not.

There is a warning that you may suffer some data loss when running a chkdsk with error correction but I have never seen that happen.  The down side is that it can take a long time (several to many hours) depending on the size of your HDD, the number of files, the speed of your system and what the chkdsk finds to do.

You might get some other ideas iif we knew more about your system:

Unfortunately, the MS Answers forums implementation does not prompt for any system information when a new question is asked, so we know absolutely nothing about your system.

Not knowing fundamental information about a problem prolongs the frustration and agony of resolving these issues but that is the way they choose to run things here.

Thank you MS Answers owners, for continuing to make the resolution of simple problems as frustrating and time consuming as possible.

Please answer the following questions as best you can:

What is your system make and model?

If you have a Dell computer, what is the Service Tag Number?

Describe your current antivirus and anti malware situation:  Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE), McAfee, Symantec, Norton, Spybot, AVG, Avira!,  avast!. Panda, Trend Micro, CA, Defender, ZoneAlarm, PC Tools, Comodo, etc.

Was the issue preceded by a power interruption, aborted restart, or improper shutdown?  (this includes plug pulling, power buttons, removing the battery, etc.)

Does the afflicted system have a working CD/DVD drive (internal or external)?

Do you have a genuine bootable XP installation CD that is the same Service Pack as your installed Service Pack (this is not the same as any Recovery CDs that came with your system)?
