windows xp professional crashes when i try to play video

I am on Windows XP Professional,  Version 2002, Service Pack 3.  My system is a Systemax with an Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.2 GHZ with 2.75 GB RAM

Every time I go to a site with videos or open a video or try to play a video, my system reboots into safemode.  It is really annoying because almost every web site you see now has some video on it or it plays a video automatically.  I downloading and installing the Microsoft Fix It Codec Crashes fix and it did no good AT ALL.  please help.

Hi,

·         Which browser you are using?

·         On which player you are trying to play the video?

·         Did you make any software or hardware changes on your machine prior to this issue?

Let’s follow these methods and check if the issue persists.

Method 1

If you are using Internet Explorer, you may run the “Fix it” tool from this link.

Playing video files crashes or freezes Internet Explorer or Windows

Method 2

You may download & install the latest  Adobe Flash Player and check if the issue persists.

Hope the information helps. Please post back and let us know.

Considering the fact that your computer is INTEL-based, you wouldn't be using the 'on-board Graphics' by any chance?

Everything in your request says so. Using 2.75 Gb Ram is a 'dead-giveaway'.

Solution?

Buy an 'Add-in Graphics card',perferrably an AMD/ATI or a nVIDIA, never another INTEL 'replacment'. DISABLE the 'on-board version, via the BIOS, install the 'add-in' one you've just bought.

Start your computer, when it has settled, you will using possibly a 'generic driver' to get things going, so, now, you install the software CD that came with your new 'add-in' graphics card.

Once that is loaded, RESET your Screen Resolution....to your desired level.

You should be able to watch those 'videos'....from there-on.

Thanks for your reply. I already installed the "Fix It" for playing videos
and crashes two times already and it did nothing for the problem.  I tried
to download the Flash player upgrade three times and nothing happened.  it
would not download to my computer at all.  yes, i am using Internet
Explorer.  I do not use any player to play video, any site with video on it
or YouTube or anything with video crashes the system.  Did I mention my
syst. is Windows XP Professional version 2002, Service pack 3, and Internet
Explorer v. 8?  Please help.

Hi,

Have you tried the steps suggested by ‘cookie7746’?

You may create a new user account with administrative privilege and check if the issue persists.

How to create and configure user accounts in Windows XP

If you don’t have any issue in the new user account, access the link below and follow the steps to fix a corrupted user profile:

How to copy data from a corrupted user profile to a new profile in Windows XP

Hope the information helps. Please post back and let us know.

I really don't understand what cookie7746 was tellling me to do.  I have an ATI Fire GL V3600 graphics card.  I don't understand the dead giveaway comment.  Why do I need to create another user account?  I will do it if necessary.  Also, I finally got Flash to install in my computer.  Let me know what I need to do.  I wanted to view video about the tsunami and earthquake in Japan and elsewhere.

Thank you all for your assistance.

Hi, all I have the same issue and I downloaded MS SDK v7.1 to analyze the mini dump files.  After the internet videos crash the os nothing gets detected with;

"C:\Program Files\Debugging Tools for Windows (x86)\windbg.exe" -I

I narrow the issue to several problems image ntoskrnl.exe and maybe ativvaxx.dll has wrong symbols.  However I am not sure if some of the error pertain to how MS SDK analyzes the mini dump.

All other diagnostic tools are unable to detect the codecs that needs repair and I do not have cab files to extract from.

I was waiting for a video to load which took too long and closed the browser and then all my problems started.  Thus far, I loaded two versions of .net framework required hd maintenance.

Some videos still working - some BSD the machine.

I would like to help.  What is SDK?  What is BSD?  I actually found a solution but to me, I don't know why it worked but it did.  First, I went to Microsoft updates and got 51 updates for my Windows XP Professional 2002 Service Pack 3, restarted.  Then, I changed my refresh rate for my display to 72 from 75, restarted.  Then, I went to the web site for the graphics card I have installed and downloaded the updated drivers, restarted.  For some reason completely unknown to me, this cleared up not only the graphics and video problem but also cleared up the issue I had with my wiFi not working for my wife's Ipad.  I will try to remember the Debugging Tools if I have them.

Good luck
