Windows won't boot after Ram upgrade (laptop)

Hi Everyone,

I wonder if you all can help me with my issue. So basically I've recently bought a new DDR4 SO-DIMM for my ASUS Vivobook 15 and post installing the new ram, my system just won't boot Windows. It gets stuck at the "Starting Automatic Repair" page. But the BIOS detects the ram and also was able to boot in a live Ubuntu environment using a bootable USB and it detected the ram as well.

My specs:

Laptop - Asus Vivobook x505za-EJ563T, with Ryzen 5 2500U and 4GB soldered DDR4 2400Mhz CL17

OS - Windows 10 Home (came with the laptop)

New RAM - Kingston 4GB DDR4 2400Mhz CL17 (KVR24S17S6/4)

Also note the first time I put the RAM I had a BSODs saying bfadi.sys is corrupted, then I removed the new ram and did a system restore which repaired it. And also, my system boots if I remove the new ram.

Hi SouravFZ

I am Dave, an Independent Advisor, I will help you with this . . .

If you remove the old RAM and just use the new RAM, does your laptop boot?

Is the RAM you purchased Non-ECC SODIMM RAM and was that indicated on the Kingston website as compatible with your laptop?

Thanks DaveM121 for the quick response.

I forgot to mention but the onboard RAM that came with the laptop was a soldered 4GB DDR4 from Samsung with same CAS latency and frequency as the new RAM.

The new RAM is a Non-ECC SODIMM module. Here's the link to the kingston site with details regarding the ram that supports my system.

https://www.kingston.com/en/memory/search/discontinuedmodels?model=99554&devicetype=3&mfr=ASU&line=Vivobook

So to answer your question, I don't have the option to isolate the new RAM to see if it boots up Windows. However as I mentioned earlier the new RAM combined with the old onboard RAM was successful enough to boot up Ubuntu from a live mode through an USB and it detected there as well as in the BIOS.

Hi SouravFZ

Yes, that RAM is compatible with your system and should not be causing this problem with booting Windows 10. have you checked the support page for your laptop to see if a BIOS update is available for that?

Hi Soura

It won't boot because there is a conflict between both memories. You need to find the same memory model as the old one ( soldered 4GB DDR4 from Samsung) .  This is what you need

Good luck

I actually did check and the BIOS is updated to the latest one. I thought about flashing it with the same version just to see of that resets it, but didn't do it yet. Read in some forum that resetting the CMOS usually helps, but dunno how to do that in a laptop.

So far, there were some issues happening with my OS as well, so doing a fresh install now and then will see if it boots with the new RAM.

Hi Livincible,

It should still work if its compatible,  cuz I tried finding a module version of the soldered Samsung RAM that's onboard, but I really couldn't find one in stock. I've seen people having luck with Crucial and other make RAMs. So I don't think there'll be much conflict as long as they are compatible. And in that sense, I've checked it from Kingston's site for compatibility and even had matching frequencies, CAS latency and voltages. Still the issue persists only for Windows.

Hi Sourav

>It gets stuck at the "Starting Automatic Repair" page

I think your laptop boot but gets stuck at  "Starting Automatic Repair" page".  Right? then it is not the ram issue.Your windows boot is corrupted. These commands should help you up, see this video

  • bootrec /fixmbr
  • bootrec /fixboot
  • bootrec /scanos
  • bootrec /rebuildbcd

If it doesn't work next video

Good luck
