Windows Vista Service Pack 2 – All Language Standalone (KB948465) – Installation fails with error code 0x80070490
I have tried to install windows vista service pack 2 from the Microsoft Download Center but it always fails with error code 0x80070490. I have run the Microsoft Fix it troubleshooter. When the troubleshooter is complete, the issues found is: “Windows update components must be repaired” and the Fix status is: “Fixed”. I tried installing windows vista SP2 again but it failed with the same error code (0x80070490). I then downloaded and run the System Update Readiness tool (Checksur.exe) which was successful but when I tried to install SP2 again it failed with the same error code (0x80070490). I am unable to “Perform a repair installation of Windows” since I have misplaced my windows vista R2 DVD and other CD’s etc.
Note: Under 'Windows update' on my PC, I selected 'View update history' and saw that SP2 was unsuccesfully installed on my pc on 21/10/2009 as follows;
Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (KB948465)

Why wasn't SP2 installed years ago?Thanks for your response. When I purchased the computer it came with SP1 installed. According to windows update history, SP2 was installed in 2009 but it failed. At the time I wasn't aware and only now realising that I need to install SP2 as a prerequisite to install an internet security suite.

Please answer each of the following diagnostic questions in a correspondingly-numbered list in your very next reply (no need to quote this post):
1. What is the full name of your currently-installed anti-virus application or security suite and when (approx. date) does your subscription (if any) expire? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender) are installed? What third-party firewall (if any)?
2. Has a(nother) Norton application or a McAfee application EVER been installed on the computer?
3. Did a Norton free-trial or a McAfee free-trial [PICK ONE] come preinstalled on the computer when you bought it? (Doesn't matter if you never used or Activated it.)
4. Is Firefox, Chrome or any other alternate browser installed?
5a. Assuming Java is installed, is Java Version 7 Update 21 (or higher) installed? TEST HERE USING INTERNET EXPLORER ONLY! => http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp
5b. Is Adobe Flash Player v11.7.700.169 (or higher) installed? TEST HERE USING INTERNET EXPLORER ONLY! => http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/
6. Are you in the habit of using "Registry cleaners" (e.g., Registry Mechanic; System Mechanic; RegCure; RegClean Pro; Advanced SystemCare; Registry Booster; McAfee QuickClean; AVG PC TuneUp; Norton Registry Cleaner; PCTools Optimiser; SpeedUpMyPC; Advanced System Optimizer; TuneUp Utilities; WinMaximizer; WinSweeper; CCleaner)?
7. Have you ever had occasion to do a Repair Install or a clean install of Vista for any reason?
===================================================================
Note: Support for Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) ended on Tuesday, 12 July 2011. Computers still running Vista SP1 "will no longer receive software updates [i.e., updates released after 12 July 2011 so you're now missing nearly two years' worth of critical security updates!] from Windows Update" until SP2 has been installed (which will require that several Prerequisite Updates be installed first).

2. McAfee was preinstalled on the computer when I purchased it in 2007.
3. McAfee was preinstalled on the computer but I am not sure if it was a free trial or not. I did not have to activate it. I installed AVG in May 2009 (online download).
4. Internet explorer 8, firefox, google desktop and bing are installed.
5a. When I click the 'Verify' button, I get the following message;
Verifying Installation
Detecting Java on your computer
A security prompt may appear. Click Run to allow the verification process to continue.
Depending on your system settings, you may need to respond to prompts to allow the verification to continue.
If you have installed Java and there is an error with the verification, there could be a configuration issue (eg. browser, Java control panel, security settings).
A few minutes later I get the following message;
Verify Java Version
We are unable to verify if Java is currently installed and enabled in your browser.
If you have installed Java and there is an error with the verification, there could be a configuration issue (eg. browser, Java control panel, security settings).
I am able to download Java and get the following message after clicking the download link;
Download Java for Windows
By downloading Java you acknowledge that you have read and accepted the terms of the end user license agreement
6. I am not in the habit of using these tools but I have previously purchased AVG PC TuneUp 2011 which is still installed on my computer. I haven't used it since 2011. I have recently purchased RegCure Pro but waiting to contact the company to activate the software. However, I recently realised that RegCure Pro requires SP2 to work. I didn't see this when I was purchasing the software so I may request a refund.
7. No
From your note, it seems that I have to install a lot of updates before SP2 can be installed? Can you help with this?
Just to make you aware that the error code 0x80070490 is shown as;

1. Had your McAfee subscription already expired by the time you replaced it with an AVG application in (May?) 2009?
2. Did you (a) uninstall the McAfee application AND THEN (b) download/run the McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool & reboot (c) BEFORE you installed the AVG application?
3. Is Internet Explorer or Firefox your default Browser?
4. Is Internet Explorer working OK if/when you intentionally choose to use it?
5. Are ALL of the following updates listed in Installed Updates (not Update History)?
- KB2555917, KB2507938; KB2530548, KB2544521, KB2544893, KB2476490, KB2535512, KB2393802 & KB971029
6. Do you have backups of ALL the changes AVG PC TuneUp has EVER made to the computer? [1]

[1] Injudicious use of registry cleaners may be playing a role here. TIP: If you ever again think your Registry needs to be cleaned, repaired, boosted, tuned-up, cured, tweaked, fixed, maximized, "swept" or optimised (it doesn't), read

2. I don't remember if I uninstalled the McAfee application before I installed AVG. I did not download/run the McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool & reboot before installing AVG. However, McAfee is no longer installed on my computer so I must have uninstalled it at some stage; probably after AVG was installed because I remember contacting AVG customer services about the AVG installation. During this time I think they may have advised me to uninstall McAfee.
3. I checked this by clicking Firefox button/Options/Advanced panel/General tab and Firefox is currently my default browser.
4. As far as I am aware when I previously used internet explorer it worked ok, but I rarely use it. When I clicked on the icon yesterday and today the main page loaded ok but when I opened a second tab the page loaded as follows;
} } else { amPm = "PM"; if (currHour > 12) { currHour = currHour - 12; } } var currMinute = date.getMinutes() + ""; if (currMinute.length == 1) currMinute = "0" + currMinute; document.getElementById("date").innerHTML = days[currDay] + ", " + monthes[currMonth] + " " + currDate; document.getElementById("time").innerHTML = currHour + ":" + currMinute + " " + amPm; document.getElementById("dateTimeHeader").style.visibility = ""; [removed_js]; } function trackLink(linkObj, trackingCode) { pageTracker._trackPageview(trackingCode); [removed_js]{location=linkObj.href;}, 100); return false; } window.ssgObj = {}; window.onload = [removed_js] { ssgObj.y={first:[]};window.[removed_js]{var xjs=document.createElement('script');xjs.src='/scripts/searchSuggest.js';document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0].appendChild(xjs)},0);ssgObj.y.first.push([removed_js]{ssgObj.ac.i(document.f,document.f.si, suggestLanguage, suggestCountry, true, document.getElementById('SGTable'));try{ssgObj.ac.tc("close");}catch(e){}}); ssgObj.xjs_ready=1; sf(); handleLanguageTableDisplay(); _addEventToObj(document, "click", closeMoreOptions); getDateTime(); var ebayPixel = new Image(); ebayPixel.src = "http://rover.ebay.com/ar/1/710-53481-19255-0/1?adtype=1&size=1x1&type=1&campid=5336102271&toolid=10001&customid=&mpt="+Math.floor(Math.random()*999999999999); //document.getElementById("iaContainer").src="http://feed-ads.com/?w=728&h=90&p=15&c=7&r=www.searchnu.com&k=windows update error code 80070103"; }
Note the windows update error code 80070103. If I close this tab and open it again the same thing happens. If I close and open again the page loads ok, so its a bit temperamental. A search from the main page search bar appears to work ok.

Tuneup your PC for 12 months
Your free Tuneup period is complete. To keep your PC optimized, purchase AVG PC Tuneup
More information | I already have a license code
Purchase Now/Close
I remember AVG PC Tuneup doing scans and finding registry errors on my pc everytime I turned on the computer but then it would ask me to pay. I already paid for it and contacted AVG about this but did not get it resolved since I paid for the application through a third party email.
Thanks for the TIP on registry cleaners, I won't be making that misatake again. However, I was thinking of purchasing the Bitdefender Total Security 2013 suite which comes with a Tuneup module as follows;
- Tune-Up
Your security software isn’t slowing down your computer. So what is? Bitdefender Total Security comes complete with a Tune-Up module, which cleans up your file system and registry for enhanced performance.

Ouch! Not good...
Chances are you're seeing the effects of an ongoing hijackware infection, most likely compounded by a W32/Alureon-variant rootkit infection!
OPTION A: Residents of North America (US & CA), the UK (and perhaps other regions now) may obtain Microsoft-sponsored Premium (i.e., paid) Support via the Answer Desk => http://answerdesk.microsoftstore.com [1]
OPTION B (Strongly Recommended!): See...
• Cleaning a Compromised System
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc700813.aspx
Then see the (my) ANSWER post in this thread and follow those instructions (to-the-letter & in order! ) to return your computer to a secure & functional state: http://answers.microsoft.com/thread/c44429fb-3f7c-4646-8529-5a97bb3cd0eb
If you need additional assistance with the clean install, you can begin your own, new thread in this forum: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-system
If these procedures are outside of your technical "comfort zone" - and there is no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea - take the computer to a local, reputable and independent (i.e., not a "BigBoxStore" or the Geek Squad!) computer repair shop & let them do the work.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Note: The computer should NOT be connected to the internet or any local networks (i.e., other computers) in its current state. All of your personal data (e.g., online banking & credit-card passwords) should be considered at-risk, if not already compromised.
Wish I'd had better news for you. Good luck!
Since I have nothing further to add to this discussion, I will no longer be monitoring this thread.
