"Windows Update" Tab Missing Under "Update & Security"

Hello,

I noticed a few days ago that the "Windows Update" Tab in the "Update & Security" section of the Settings App had disappeared.

I've done all the basic troubleshooting steps, sfc, etc, nothing is reporting any errors or issues.

I would prefer not to just reinstall the OS to fix a bug with the settings app.

If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

Thanks.

Hi Tyler. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 9 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

1) There is a new guided walk-through from Microsoft for repairing Windows Update that leads up to resetting components if necessary: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/10164/.... Try running that first.

2) If that fails try manually resetting Windows Update Service:

Open administrative Command Prompt by typing CMD in Start Search, right click result to Run as Administrator, copy and paste or type the following commands one-by-one followed by Enter key.

net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc
net stop bits
net stop msiserver
Ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
Ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old
net start wuauserv
net start cryptSvc
net start bits
net start msiserver

Close Command Prompt and see if Windows Updates works then

3) Go over this checklist to make sure the install is set up correctly, optimized for best performance, and any needed repairs get done: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

Start with Step 4 to turn off Startup freeloaders which can conflict and cause issues, then Step 7 to check for infection the most thorough way, then step 10 to check for damaged System Files. Then continue with the other steps to go over your install most thoroughly.

4) If nothing else helps you can run a Repair Install by installing the Media Creation Tool and choosing from it to Upgrade Now. This reinstalls Windows in about an hour while saving your files, apps and most settings, solves many problems while also bringing it up to the latest version which you need anyway and by the most stable method. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/m...

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Hi Greg,

Thanks for the Reply.

There isn't actually an issue with Windows Update itself. My machine continues to check and get/install updates as normal.

I can see in the Event Logs that it has completed recent checks for updates successfully.

I only don't have the tab that should take me to the Windows Update screen.

I went through the steps from the MS guide anyway (Well, up until the reset windows step), and didn't have any changes.

Let me know if you have any other suggestions.

Thanks.

To have a tab missing from a Settings page is serious corruption.

Try resetting the Settings app from Option Two here: http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/3175-apps-re...

No luck. Re-Registering the Settings App did not make the button appear.

Then normally running SFC should find and fix the System file that's broken causing something like that, but if not then for sure the Repair Install will.

Is your system a part of a company environment or do you remember making changes to the group policy in nearby time?

Hi Sumit,

No, I'm the Systems Admin for our Company, and there has been no changes to group policy for a few months.

We also do not have any group policies around Windows Settings, Preferences, anything I could see that would be connected.

Thanks.

As Greg said a Repair install would probably fix this.
