Windows update KB4507453

Once again there are problems with Windows 10 1903 updates.

Two or so weeks ago KB4501375 failed to install, and this still shows in the Update listing as failed. error code 0x800f0904.

Yesterday and today KB4507453 failed to install after several retries. error code 0x800f0904.

At least the error codes are common, although the fix may be more difficult.

Is the latest update failure related to the KB4501375 install failure? i.e. is the first update required before the second?

during the update, the antivirus product is disabled completely, but not uninstalled. This seems to be a new requirement with Windows 10, 1903. In the past all that was required was to run antivirus in "silent mode" and disable "tamper protect".

Hi VincentVerrill
I am Vijay, an Independent Advisor. I am here to work with you on this problem.

I recommend that you do a manual update for this KB.

1. Windows Key+X > Windows Powershell (Admin)
Type following (or copy and paste following) one by one and Enter

net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc
net stop bits
net stop msiserver
Ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
Ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old
net start wuauserv
net start cryptSvc
net start bits
net start msiserver

2. Type following in Windows Start Search box (Cortana) and hit Enter %systemroot%\Logs\CBS > Rename CBS.Log to something else.
If it doesn't allow you to rename - Type services in Windows Start Search box > Click Services > Scroll down to find the Windows Modules Installer service and double-click on it > Set its startup type to Manual > Reboot your computer
Go to C:\Windows\Logs\CBS > Rename CBS.Log > Reboot your computer > Then go back into the Services App and set Windows Modules Installer Service back to Automatic Startup (Note CBS log files contain information about windows update, SFC etc)

3. You can download the updates from Microsoft Catalog and update manually. Search for relevant KB in the Catalog.

Do let me know if you require any further help on this. Will be glad to help you.

Hello,

Please run Windows Update troubleshooter from Settings app > Update & security > Troubleshoot. See if it works.

If that doesn't work, try this:

Open administrative Command Prompt and type following commands one-by-one followed by Enter key.

net stop wuauserv

net stop cryptSvc

net stop bits

net stop msiserver

Ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

Ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old

net start wuauserv

net start cryptSvc

net start bits

net start msiserver

Close Command Prompt and see if Windows Updates works then.

Let us know if this helps!

It looked promising at first, having cun command prompt as administrator.

However, the update KB4507453 failed to install.

There's no reference to the previously failed KB4501375 being available as an update.

May need more help.

To close this particular issue.

Windows Support looked at my HP dv6 laptop.

The conclusion is that the laptop version is not compatible with Windows 10 1903, as the BIOS cannot be updated. No updates are available beyond that installed for Windows 7 64 bit.
A long list provided on the HP support website shows that this laptop is untested for version 1903.

Conclusion is that (some) Windows updates will never install.

I can go back to 1809, but MS Support say that it must be a clean install.

That is also happening to my windows 10 del G7 laptop. Not only that update is failing to complete but a net framework as well (KB4506991) . Both fail every time. It's been like this for a while.

I don't think it has any relation with the fact that you are using windows 7

Hi,
I had the same issue... KB4507453 & KB4506991 update failed with 0x800f0904 error, however this solved it with cmd(admin) "fsutil resource setautoreset true C:\" and restart after.
