Windows update fails with Error 0x800f0900

Unable to install both latest cumulative updates.

The installation of 2022-08 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 21H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5016629) failed with Error 0x800f0900

I ran the Troubleshoot app on Windows Update. It completed to resolve window update issue. However, running Windows update still failed with same Error 0x800f0900.

I have tried processes stated as below:

1. sfc /scannow

Result: Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

2. Running Repair-WindowsImage -Online -RestoreHealth in Powershell

Result: Repair-WindowsImage : The restore operation failed. Either the repair source was not found or the component store
cannot be repaired.

3. Have already Reset Windows Update database

4. I tried to install KB5016629 manually from Microsoft®Update Catalog.

Result: The update was not installed (KB5016629)

Restarted the computer several times and search the internet for fixes without success.

Please help. Thanks, Mal.

Hi Mal.
I'm David, and I'm happy to help you.

Do you have third-party antivirus or other third-party security software? If yes, which one?
Temporarily disable it and try installing the update.

If it persists, perform a clean boot to see if any third-party programs in the background are preventing Windows from updating. Follow the instructions carefully.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/how-t...
After updating, return to normal boot as instructed in "Reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting".

Feel free to ask back any questions.

I have been using Kaspersky as my security software.

I have tried to disable it (pausing it) then install the update, still in vain.

I will try to do clean boot, but before doing it, I would like to clarify something first.

1 After going into clean boot, can I still use Microsoft edge to look for instructions on the internet? (Do I need to save the processes of clean boot in advance?)

2. Is installing window update share the same processes in clean boot mode (setting-> Window Update-> install the update)

1) The Clean Boot procedure will only disable third-party programs and services. Therefore, the Windows services will remain active. Then you should still have access to the internet.
Follow the instructions in the article I suggested to the letter to avoid disabling essential system services.

2) The procedure for installing updates in Windows does not change when starting in a Clean Boot state.

I tried the clean boot, but still in vain...... (same error code: Install error - 0x800f0900)

I discovered there is another 2022-08 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 for x64- based Ststems (KB5016691) is avaliable.

However, it also stated, We couldn't install this update, but you can try again (0x80248007)

What should I do next?

I've had some cases where the antivirus prevented this update from being installed even after being disabled. That's because some antivirus can continue to impact the system even when disabled.

Therefore, I suggest you temporarily remove Kaspersky, preferably using the removal tool provided by the developer. Then try to install the update.
After installing the update, you can reinstall Kaspersky.
