Windows Update fails with error 0x 8004 FF80

I am responsible for a machine that has frequent Windows Update failures, but some updates work OK.

Basic info:

Acer Aspire X3910
Pentium Dual-Core CPU  E6600, 3.06 GHz
4 GB RAM
64-bit Operating System
"Windows is activated"
Windows 7 Home Premium
Service Pack 1

Here are sample update failures (not showing successes):

Hi Joe,

Is there any other security software installed on your computer?


This issue might occur due to program conflicts windows update settings.


Let’s try the following methods and check if it helps.


Method 1:


You may run the Windows Update troubleshooter and check if the issue still persists.


Open the Windows Update troubleshooter:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Open-the-Windows-Update-troubleshooter


Method 2:


I would suggest you to perform a clean boot and disable security software and check if you are able to install windows update manually.


Clean boot will check if any third party application is causing the issue, as clean boot helps in eliminating software conflicts.


a)
Press Windows + R Type msconfig in the search box, and then tap or click msconfig.

b) On the Servicestab of the System Configuration dialog box, tap or click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then tap or click Disable all.

c) On the Startuptab of the System Configuration dialog box, tap or click Open Task Manager.

d) On the Startuptab in Task Manager, for each startup item, select the item and then click Disable.

e) Close Task Manager.

f) On the Startuptab of the System Configuration dialog box, tap or click OK, and then restart the computer.


Note: Once you are done with the troubleshooting, perform the steps in “How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with
Clean Bootto reset computer as usual.


Note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

Download and install the update manually and check if it helps.



Follow the steps to install the update manually:


a.
Go to the
Microsoft download center page

b. Type the KB number in the search box and press Enter.

c. Download and install the update and check if it helps.


Method 3:
