Windows Update Error Code 80080005.

Hi Everyone,

I've been having problems with Windows Updates for a while now and I've looked through the threads on this error code and I've tried the solutions but nothing seems to work.

Whenever I try to check for updates I'm given the message "Windows cannot search for new updates. Code 80080005 - Windows encountered an unknown error" I would be really grateful if anyone could help me solve this.

I'm using Windows Vista Home Basic 32-Bit Operating System on a Dell Inspiron 1525. I'm also using McAfee Total Protection anti-virus and I've tried disabling the firewalls but it doesn't work.

Thanks for any advice you can offer!

Lauren

Hi,

I would suggest you to follow these steps and check if it helps:

Method 1:

Step 1:

If you have installed any security software on the computer, I would suggest you to temporarily disable it and check if the same issue occurs. Make sure you enable it once it is done.

Thanks for your suggestions but I tried both and neither have worked. Windows still won't check for updates, I get the same message and error code as before.

Hi lauren42,

This error could most likely occur if the access permissions for BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) have been modified. To repair these access permissions.

1. Click Start, Type in “cmd” in the search bar without the quotes.
2. Right click on cmd and select Run as administrator.
3. Type the following command, and then press ENTER :
sc sdset bits D:(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;SY)(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;BA)(A;;CCLCSWLOCRRC;;;AU)(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;PU)
3.  Click Start , click Run , type services.msc , and then click OK
4.  Double-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service.
5.  In the General tab, click Start

Test if you are able to check for updates.
