Hi,

Thank you for your response.

Method 1:

I would suggest you to set your computer in Clean Boot state and check if the same issue occurs.

By setting your system in clean boot state helps in identifying if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue.

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: After clean boot troubleshooting step, follow Step 7 in the provided link to return your computer to Normal startup mode.

Method 2:

Also try to scan your computer from Microsoft Safety Scanner, which would help us to get rid of viruses, spyware, and other malicious software.

The Microsoft Safety Scanner is a free downloadable security tool that provides on-demand scanning and helps remove viruses, spyware, and other malicious software. It works with your existing antivirus software.

http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

Note: The Microsoft Safety Scanner expires 10 days after being downloaded. To rerun a scan with the latest anti-malware definitions, download and run the Microsoft Safety Scanner again.

Note: Any data files that are infected may only be cleaned by deleting the file entirely, which means there is a potential for data loss.

Hope this information is helpful.

  • I would check the status of Services.

Click on the Start button and select Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. Locate Background Intelligent Tranfer Service in the list. Check that the StartUp type is Manual and that you can start it. If it is not set to Manual right click and select Properties, General tab. There is a box after StartUp type. The options are available on a drop down by clicking on the arrow down to the right of the box. Make the change and click on Apply and OK. Restart the computer and check that you can start it.

    Hi Gerry,

I follow the steps you mentioned, but I can't find Background Intellligent Transfer Service in the list in the services window.  Is this the root of my problem? How can I fix it ?

    Hello, TS Lim.

To change or restart the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
    1. Open Administrative Tools.

    2. Double-click Services. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

    4. On the General tab, next to Startup type, make sure that Automatic (Delayed Start) is selected.

    5. Next to Service status, check to see if the service is started. If it's not, click Start.

To change or restart the Windows Event Log service
    1. Open Administrative Tools.

    2. Double-click Services. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

    3. Right-click the Windows Event Log service, and then click Properties.

    4. On the General tab, next to Startup type, make sure that Automatic is selected.

    5. Next to Service status, check to see if the service is started. If it's not, click Start.

    Thanks!

    Thanks for your feedback.

What would you do if the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) is not on that list? Which is what TS Lim had the problem with...as do I.

Since you cant right click the item that is not there.

    Hi,

    1.       Did you try to reset windows update components?

    2.       Did you run SFC scan on the computer?

    3.       Were there any recent changes made to the computer prior to the issue?

I would suggest you to create a new administrator user account and check if the same issue occurs.

Follow the given link to create new user account.

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/Create-a-user-account

If you don’t have any issue in the new user account, access the link below and follow the steps to fix a corrupted user profile.

    1 yes

    2 yes

3 im not sure when it happened exactly because I was up to date and had not thought about it until recently when I realized I had not gotten an update in a couple months.

I ended up formating my boot drive and reinstalling windows though. So I am good now but this has happened to me three times already and it seems to be connected to windows security essentials since when ever this problem happens they both fail to work.

I guess ill just have to run update after every install untill I can figure out what program is doing this and Ill post if I can figure it out.
