Q: Windows update error 80070002

Updates worked for about three months after purchase new system and stopped in December .

I'm running Windows 7

Following the Microsoft help and trolling through the web site has led me to try the following, with the usual reboots in between….

  • Stoped Windows update services, cleared temporary files and restarted the services
  • Turned of firewal l and antivirus tool. (Turned it back on after it didn’t resolve issue)
  • Run the Windows update readiness tool
  • Run the System file checker tool. Run check disk tool
  • Reset the content of the Catroot2 folder
  • Run the Microsoft Fix It tool in default and in aggressive modes
  • Rename the SoftwareDistribution folder
  • Clear the BITS queue of any current jobs
  • Download and manually install the update.

Any ideas?  I'd rather not do the back up and reinstall dance.

When I click Go online and resolve now the system hangs in the Windows validation in process.

Method 1 didn't resolve the problem.  I had tried this before, but forgot to mention in my list.

As mention in my original message I have already tried Method 2 and 3.

Issue still exists.

Sorry this didn't help.

Sorry for the delay had to wait until weekend to get some spare time.

Unfortunately this upgrade didn't help either.

Followed the article's instructions (I was not presented with steps 5 or 6).

Installation stops at the "Gathering files, settings, and programs" step with a message of "Setup can't continue. Restart the competer and restart Setup.  When prompted, try getting the latest updates."

I did try restarting, shut down and wait, but nothing worked.

So still stuck with same issue of not being able to get latest updates.
