Windows Update Continuously fails "error 0x8007000d"

I've been trying to install Windows Update 2004 for x64 Systems KB4596242, but I keep getting the following error message every single time.

Thinking that it was a corrupt download, I cleaned out Windows/Software Distribution  to force Update to redownload which has worked before but the same result happened again. Oddly enough, looking at Task Manager shows that Windows Modules Installer Worker continues to run even after this update "fails."

ReportingEvents.log reads as thus

I have tried to download the update from Windows Update Catalog and manually install but the update for some reason fails there as well, finishing with an error message stating that the update was not installed.

Thank you. Finally. I ran this in Command prompt admin -

dism /online /remove-capability /capabilityname:Analog.Holographic.Desktop~~~~0.0.1.0”

Rebooted and all Windows 10 updates for last 6 weeks installed.

I had tried everything but this worked.

Re booted and checked for updates and “You’re up to date”

Plugged G2 back in, it downloaded its software and back in business all good.

But... then Windows update started re-downloading KB5001649 (my most recent cumulative update) that clearly states successfully installed in update history.

So a quick reboot to stop and hide that update with Win10 HideShow app.

Probably have to run that dism before each update until Microsoft fixes this.

Same situation here, as mentioned above:

  • Disable Holographic Desktop

  • Install KB5000802

  • Restart

  • Install Holographic Desktop OR connect HP Reverb G2 and let it auto-download software

  • Update KB5000802 appears in Windows Updates and fails to install (stuck at 74%)

Now I tried the following route instead:

  • Install 20H2 update - originally stuck at 74% until I removed Holographic Desktop, then it immediately continued

  • Restart, 20H2 installed OK

  • Allow KB5001649 to install - the cumulative March update for 20H2

  • Restart

  • Connect HP Reverb G2 headset, allow software to auto-download

  • KB5001649 reappears in Windows Updates, and now it's stuck at 74%, same as KB5000802 and 20H2 before it

Conclusion: any time the VR software is installed, none of these updates will proceed.

I have never had the need to hide any Windows updates before but if it persists then I will look into it - thanks for the tip!

This doesn't appear to be an issue that can be fixed with DISM.  I went so far as to try the limitedaccess command along with the version of Windows for the Install.wim and that also fails.  About 98 percent of the dism will run and then the error returns (0x80073712).  I've managed to reproduce the error in a lab and I am currently throwing everything at it.

1) try to download same update from the update windows catalog and run it

2) review the CBS logs

3) review the DISM logs

4) checking the values of the .MUM file for that windows update (C:\windows\servicing\packages)

I'm not running Windows 10 but instead, this is occurring on a Windows Server 2016.

I see I can also get the error with arrow199 issue.   It would be great if this was only happening in my lab but it is also appearing in the cloud.

The first one to fail was the February Servicing update.  Once that failed it seems as though a host of the updates began failing after that one update.   I read somewhere it was removed so I removed it from the server.   It doesn't seem to make much difference.

If you are stuck with the recent (Jan 15th WIN10 update), as per this reddit post:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/comments/kw4hgt/mbr2gpt_broke_winupdate/

I've issued the following command in CMD:

dism /online /remove-capability /capabilityname:Analog.Holographic.Desktop~~~~0.0.1.0

and the issue got fixed. It appears it had something to do with WMR...

Thank you!  This worked for me.

I've tried so many of these 'solutions' on here to-date... tried again today.. but to no avail.  I'm mystified that the only solution is to restore windows thus losing all my data and apps (that's he only option I get.)

It really feels like an OTT 'solution' that may or may not work.. It feels a bit like knocking down your entire house and rebuilding just to solve a simple wiring problem!

Would someone from Microsoft PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE! come up with a definitive AND CONSOLIDATED 'Windows Update fixes' page that relates to a proper fix for these error code TYPES or else at least re-visit the error coding so a proper diagnosis can be made.

My laptop is a new ASUS Vivobook S14/14  I've only just got it loaded with all the music production apps n software I need.  I've been to ASUS SUPPORT but they simply point me to these pages...

THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR MONTHS NOW... :(

Update: I bit the bullet and decided to do a windows restore using the option to restore locally... Low and behold after wiping all my stuff the error still occurred !!!

So as a last resort before sending my laptop back i did a restore but this time chose the restore from cloud option which presumably downloads a fresh win 10 copy ..

Thiss one worked!!! And my pc now accepts and installs updates as it should do

Go figure..

Now just gotta rebuild all rhat software :(

i just found out how to settle this....

you just go to check for updates > Advance Options and just tick the On for the below 2.

you will get it running and installing. No need to do SFCscan, or DISM Scan. No need to repair. It's just that the Restart notice is off... and so therefore we cannot restart.

F4llout, thank you so much for re-posting that fix from Reddit.

I was stuck on the more recent 2021-06 update with error 0x8007000d and removing this did the trick.

So many posts from other threads suggested reinstalling Windows 10 and I was like "Screw that." and kept searching and found this.

I had the same error some time back. I emptied the content of the Software Distribution folder & Updated. You can refer this guide.
