Windows update bricked my bios ?? Thought to be impossible ?

Windows forced update after 35 day disable activated (This week)

MSI - Z87-G43 * Intel i5 4670K

Gigabyte 1050Ti * SGT baracudda

Windows Pre Bricked - Ver 1709

I had my pc running in the background updating my steam library , While that was going on i was cleaning my room after a while

I noticed my pc had either restarted or gone to a low rpm on the fans (desktop) so i looked at my pc , When i looked at my pc it had a blue windows update screen taking up the center,  60% of the screen in blue 40% background black on the update screen it was requesting the password to administrator account (i was already suspicious at this point about the update)

I decided to ignore the update until i was finished cleaning then i notice the pc screen go to no signal ( not to sleep as i had only moved the mouse a moment before to clean the desk/mouse mat ) a minute later the pc shuts down and stays shut down , I then power the pc wondering if the update had forced itself to install or just quit entirely and restarted the pc . At this point the pc powers on gpu powers on and all case fans , screen outputs nothing (hdmi 1050ti) i wonder if its just my screen as ive had problems with a loose hdmi port

( not my luck in this case ) as i am troubleshooting my display the systems reboots giving no post errors or codes ( have pci post checker shipping At the moment ) the pc will stay powered on there is power supplied to the usb devices for 2-5 seconds only on system power up then then no power during idle ( i have voltage tested the usb ports all are at 4.95v bang on spec for my motherboard) then 0v thereafter

i have never seen this happen to any windows machine before though i have seen it plenty with apple on physically faulty HW

I am completely clueless as to if this is just a 1 in a million chance or if this has happened previously or if it is just a bad month for windows update and Intel

I Would love to get some feedback or clues to what could possibly have just happened to me be it a bugged update possible cyber attack what have you , I am lost to what just took place and being CompTIA certified it hurts not understanding what could lead to this

attached is a badly edited image of what i had appear on screen

original image was a password reset screen

Hi Matthew,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

We'd like to get more information regarding the issue.

  1. Are you able to sign in Windows?

  2. Once you sign in, does the display remains same as it is in the screen shot?

We would suggest you to follow steps mentioned below and check if it helps.

  1. Unplug all external devices except for keyboard and mouse.

  2. Load BIOS settings to default.

  3. Then try to boot the computer.

Disclaimer: Modifying BIOS/ complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuring of BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk.

Looking forward to your response.

pc it had a blue windows update screen taking up the center,  60% of the screen in blue 40% background black on the update screen it was requesting the password to administrator account (i was already suspicious at this point about the update

  • (( this is where the image shown appeared on my monitor  ))

I decided to ignore the update until i was finished cleaning then i notice the pc screen go to no signal ( not to sleep as i had only moved the mouse a moment before to clean the desk/mouse mat ) a minute later the pc shuts down and stays shut down     (End Quote )

the motherboard then died after the update it shut the system down the motherboard is now bricked it will not reach post it will not output any error codes only when ram is non-populated

i have only found this error online with this motherboard specifically when bios has been incorrectly flashed

I in no way flashed my bios as I have no need nor intention to do so where as just previously to this update screen the motherboard was working perfectly

currently the system ( psu replaced ram replaced with known working units )

motherboard will not post will not output display over dedicated graphics nor discrete onboard graphics hdmi dvi and vga , usb powers up until bios begins to load Eg.

( power button pressed mouse led powers on then turns off after 2 seconds of illumination )

then system fails to post completely attempts reboot then stays powered on until user forced shutdown/ power disconnect

clearing cmos

systems attempts post restarts within 5 seconds of user pressing power button attempts to post for 5 seconds again then restarts( im presuming the motherboard is finding an error and bypassing it for next post attempt  ) on the 3rd post attempt system will remain on for 40 - 50 seconds then restart for the 4th time on this post the system will not complete post and no errors have been shown by system speaker and or buzzer ( separate pins and outputs for each)  cmos has been cleared and the same results happened with graphics card uninstalled

power supply has been tested on another system for 24 hours and shown no issues or tolerance issues

so no my pc does not get to the login page it does not even post since this update appeared on my system when the update had no user input for a few minutes it disabled the monitor and 1 - 2 minutes of the screen losing signal later the system shut down completely when i attempted to start the system after what i thought was a failed update the bios was now completely corrupted

the disclaimer you have posted is also not relevant in this case as i did not initiate any modification of my systems bios configuration
