Windows Search Error Win10 update (KB4512941)

I have a group policy in place to disable the Windows search from searching the web. Everything was working fine until today when update KB4512941 was installed. The search menu is totally nonfunctional, when I disabled the gpo and restarted the system, everything was back to normal. Is anyone else having issues with the KB4512941 update? I have since uninstalled it.

This is how the search menu looks now, no search results at all.

I used Task Manager - Details - SearchUI.exe - End Task to stop the 21% - 36% CPU use . I would rather do this than revert to pre KB4512941 as it fixes lots of problems. Windows Search is still broken, but Everything search still works for me. I hope Microsoft fixes this problem on or before September Patch Tuesday.

An even better solution than my post is the post of RainerAngersbach of 2019-08-31 using O&O from https://www.oo-software.com/de/shutup10 to change the line about "search with Bing" and then restart. Now Cortana and SearchUI.exe do not chew up to 36% of CPU cycles, and Edge - beta Chromium as well as WindowsLogo-s shortcut prove Windows Search works again.

I've been fighting with this issue for a few days now, and having tried all the sfc scans, DISM restores etc, nothing was working. Created a new user on my machine, and all was fine for that user, so I felt there must be something in my profile which has become corrupted.

In the end I did the following;

  1. Navigate to C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy
  2. Rename the folder to .old or similar
  3. Carry out a search - you should find it works.

As a result of this I've observed less CPU hogging (presumably as I've removed the corruption) and I'm now able to search from the task bar, and find my apps!

Hopefully this helps!
