Hello Biro,

Thank you for posting your question on Microsoft community.

We need some more information about the issue so that we can help you better.

Do you receive any error message or code when you say, "Computer keeps searching for updates"? If so, what is the error message or code?

I appreciate you for providing details about the issue.

This issue may occur due to software conflicts or corrupt Windows update files and settings.

I would suggest you to try following methods and check if it helps.

Method 1:
Run Windows update troubleshooter and check.
Refer:
Open the Windows Update troubleshooter
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Open-the-Windows-Update-troubleshooter

It makes sure that your computer is connected to the Internet, and checks to see whether your network adapter and Windows update services are running correctly.

If it does not help, use method 2.

Method 2:
Perform clean boot and then try to check for updates.
Refer this article:
How to perform a clean boot in Windows
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135

Clean boot is performed to start Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This helps eliminate software conflicts that occur when you install a program or an update or when you run a program.

Note: After you have finished troubleshooting, follow these steps from section “How to reset the computer to start as usual after clean boot troubleshooting” to reset the computer to start as usual.

I hope this information helps.

Please do let us know if you need any further assistance.

Thank you

Hey Ratandeep.

Thanks for the reply.

I've tried all the above, and nothing.

My Windows 7 keeps searching for updates forever, fan speed keeps at 81% and cpu temperature at 75% nonstop.

Something went wrong on the last updates done on the 04/12, I'm sorry.

I will keep updates off until the problem is fixed.

Thank you.

Biro

Been there, done that, problem continues to exist.  Spent two hours 06/11/16 with your (paid) tech service people and was told problem is being worked on by engineering.  What's up?

Which security suite do you have installed ?

If using a third party antivirus windows defender should be disabled.

Go to Uninstall a program and see which Microsoft Net framework you have installed if you see Microsoft Net Framework 4.6.1 Uninstall it,

Then download Net 4.5.2 is the most consistent to have installed,

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42642

Switch your windows update setting to Never check for updates temporarily

Restart the machine

You can try and install the newest update client manually leave your update settings at Never check for updates until you install this it will do it's own search,

Restart the machine

Since the searching is hung anyway lets try to fully reset

Use option 3 on the first link or scroll down for Run Now on the second

I prefer option 3

You can first verify these services

Then click Start and type in the search box

Click the suggestion or the enter key
Make sure these services are running and on automatic or delayed start.
Double click the listings to get the options to change them.

Was 3138612 already installed ?

The reset will take a while to complete the search

But is the best chance at a long term fix to the update system

Just let it churn.
