Windows installation corrupted when installing Unreal Engine and using Xbox App

Greetings, as of recently I have encountered an issue that has damaged my installation of Windows multiple times, both in Windows 10 and 11.

This started happening when I installed State of Decay 2 from the Xbox store via Game Pass. This specific game cannot be installed in the "Xbox Games" folder, but instead a warning appears informing that "it will be installed with other Windows app in a secure folder" or something like that. It seemed odd but didn't think much about it. After that, I ran the game, which crashed and caused a BSOD.

After the PC restarted, when logging into the desktop, everything was flickering and it was impossible to use.

Looking up for solution there where many like using SFC, DSIM, CHKDSK, etc. I tried everything and nothing work. Only entering into safe mode I could use CMD to try this solutions.

After a lot of attempts, I finally decided to reinstall Windows. This solved the problem.

However, after reinstalling all my programs, the same Windows corruption happened after using the Xbox app and restarting the computer.

Looking up for solutions again, I saw that it was recommended to upgrade into Windows 11, so I did. After several hours, yet again, I reinstalled all my programs, and everything seemed to work. Restarting the PC caused no issues, until I use the Xbox app in a later day.

The next time I started my PC, the taskbar didn't worked, File Explorer couldn't open files, etc

The Windows installation was corrupted again.

I retried every solution this time on Windows 11 to no avail, nothing worked, forcing me to reinstall Windows again.

Finally, I did a final test trying to pin down what was the cause of the issue. After the clean install of Windows, I immediately installed Unreal Engine with the required Visual Studio, tested it with several projects and everything worked perfectly.

Then I opened the Xbox app, which always asks for permissions for a required component called "Gaming Services" or something like that. Since I suspected this was the issue, I restarted the PC, and lo and behold, Windows was corrupted yet again.

I'm pretty confident that the issue is caused by Unreal Engine/Visual Studio and the Xbox app having some compatibility issue, which somehow ends up corrupting Windows.

The only solution I have is simply not using the Xbox app (in which I had GamePass) in order to keep working with Unreal Engine.

Sorry this is such a long post, but I gave as much detail as possible.

If someone has any ideas on how to fix this, I would be very grateful. If not, at least maybe this can help someone else going mad as I did and point them in the right direction (which at the moment is surrendering).

Cheers!

Hi,
I'm Pedro A, Independent Advisor

I've had problems with Gaming Services.
If the cause of the problem is related to it, try performing this procedure and see if it helps to solve the problem procedure:

1 - Access the link below and install the "App Installer"

https://www.microsoft.com/store/productID/9nblg...

2 - Click Start menu and search for Windows PowerShell, open with Admin privileges.

Copy and paste the following command by hitting enter after each one
(When a conformation message appears, type Y)

winget uninstall -e Microsoft.GamingServices_8wekyb3d8bbwe

3 - Then open PowerShell window

copy and paste the following command:

start ms-windows-store://pdp/?productid=9MWPM2CQNLHN

When open Microsoft Store Gaming Services Page, click Install for the Service app on that page

restart your windows

Thanks for your input, unfortunately it doesn't solve completely the issue.

2 - Click Start menu and search for Windows PowerShell, open with Admin privileges.

Copy and paste the following command by hitting enter after each one
(When a conformation message appears, type Y)

winget uninstall -e Microsoft.GamingServices_8wekyb3d8bbwe

Running this command yielded the result "No package was found that coincides with input criteria".

I then proceeded to install Gaming Services as indicated at step 3, and rebooted Windows. The installation wasn't corrupted and the PC booted correctly. However, now at the start I get two notifications all the time, which are "DirectX Runtime (Starting)" and "Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 UWP Desktop Runtime Package (Starting)", and they never end, even after leaving them be for 30 minutes in case it was necessary to give them time.

With this happening, I cannot execute Unreal Engine, as it gives an error and crashes so fast I can't even read nor take a screenshot of what the error says.

I tried using the solution specified in this post regarding the issue: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/microsoft-store-tries-to-install-4-items-after/13535d2f-df6f-4f4c-83af-5f09d541c1d5

But, this doesn't work, after every reboot it still gives the same notifications and Unreal Engine is unusable.

Executing games from the Xbox app is possible now, but not being able to use Unreal Engine is a deal breaker, so although your solution did indeed fix the Gaming Services issues, it doesn't solve the global problem as at the moment I still can't have/use both at the same time.

Thanks for trying to solve this issue, for the moment sticking to Steam will be my option.

Cheers!

Hello O. II'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, here to help you.

See the discussion here about Unreal Engine in Windows 11:
https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Shou.... The Comments section is still open if you want to discuss it with them.

Have you tried another Unreal version:

https://www.unrealengine.com/en-US/release-note...*3Q_pr*UnrealEngine_ct*Search_pl*Brand_co*US&utm_id=17086214833&sub_campaign=&utm_content=426ReleaseNotes&utm_term=unrealengine

Crashes reported in Windows 11 here:

https://forums.unrealengine.com/t/ue4-or-ue5-cr...

https://forums.unrealengine.com/t/ue5-crashes-o...

https://forums.unrealengine.com/t/ue5-crashes-o...

https://forums.unrealengine.com/t/ue5-crashes-o...

I would continue Unreal discussion in their forums since it's pretty clearly an issue with them.

But I'd also check the baseline integrity of the WIndows 11 install:

Go over WIndows 11 with this checklist to find and fix problems:

1) See if you can System Restore to a point before the problem started:
https://itechhacks.com/system-restore-windows-11/

System Restore is your first line of defense and can take you back to a point before a problem began like a time machine. If it doesn't help then you can undo it. Read about it first in the tutorial above and then try restoring to just before this started. If System Restore is not enabled on C drive do that now so it's available in the future.

If the problem repeats or System Restore doesn't work then check which Windows Updates were installed at Settings > Update & Security > Windows Updates > Update History, uninstall them there or System Restore again, then immediately check for and block the Updates with the Hide Updates tool explained here: https://www.droidwin.com/how-to-stop-only-a-spe...

2) Update your drivers from the PC maker's Support Downloads webpage for your exact model. While there check for the latest Chipset, BIOS, Sound, Network, USB3, Bluetooth and all other drivers to compare with the version/date installled for that device in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start Menu.

If the drivers are not present or not working for Facial Recognition or Fingerprint then contact your PC manufacturer's Support.

3) Expedite install of all Windows Updates in Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for Updates, including needed restarts, then go back to check again until no more are offered.

Then go into Microsoft Store app > My Library > Get Updates and expedite all Store app Updates, too, until no more are offered.

4) Run a full Windows 11 Disk Check: https://allthings.how/how-to-run-chkdsk-in-wind...

5) Establish a Clean Boot to turn off Startup Freeloaders that can conflict and cause issues:
https://www.makeuseof.com/clean-boot-windows-11/

6) Download, install and run a full scan with free Malwarebyes from https://www.malwarebytes.com/mwb-download/ after enabling Root Kit scan in Scan Settings. Clean Up anything it finds and then run again. Turn off Real Time trial in Control panel to keep as on-demand scanner.

7) Run System File Checker/DISM in WIndows 11:
https://www.elevenforum.com/t/use-system-file-c...

8) If that doesn't fix it then you can do a Windows 11 Repair Upgrade which reinstalls Windows while saving your files and apps in place, brings it up to the latest version by the most stable method, takes about an hour and resolves most problems: https://www.elevenforum.com/t/repair-install-wi...

Feel free to ask back any questions. Based on the results you post back I may have other suggestions if necessary.

The issue is not with unreal engine it is with the Xbox app and how it downloads and installs games, it will actually disconnect your drives every time it downloads or updates, you will not see this happening unless you use a program to monitor your drives, them it will show you how often they are getting disconnected hard disk sentinel, Crystal disk just to name 2

Thanks for your feedback, I dug up more afterwards and nothing works, DirectX is not the issue as suggsted in the posted links.

I've already posted in the Unreal Engine forums as well to exhaust all options, and everyone is baffled from this.

As stated in my original post, I've already done prety much everything you suggested (Update Drivers, Update Windows, Update all Apps, running CHKDSK, SFC, DSIM; and reinstalling Windows [multiple times])

If what kjl1956 is saying is correct, we are all out of luck until Microsoft updates the Xbox app.

Anyway, thanks for your help, I'll just continue on without Xbox instead of losing my sanity over this issue, at the end of the day is not that big of a deal, I posted mostly so that other people with the same issue could see what I did and save their time doing the same failed attempts at fixing it.

Thanks for chipping in and letting us know about this.

If this is the case, there is nothing to be done unitl the Xbox app is updated.

At least we now have something to blame for all this madness.

Cheers!
