Windows Defender update failed

My last 2 Windows Defender updates show as having failed to update but when I check on the update version in WD it shows the current version and checking for updates through the WD site tells me there are no updates available.  Why would this be?

   • Which version of the Windows operating system am I running?
      http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/help/which-version-of-the-windows-operating-system-am-i-running

   • Is my PC running the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows?
      http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/find-out-32-or-64-bit

Always state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; WinXP 64-bit SP2; Vista SP1; Vista 64-bit SP2; Win7; Win7 SP1; Win7 64-bit; Win7 64-bit SP1) when posting in a forum. Please do so in your next reply.

I am using Windows7 Home premium 64 bit.  My problem only happened twice and has not re-occurred. (I am quite paranoid about being up-to-date!)  This morning's Defender update installed without any issue.  Sorry for not giving all the information first time round and thank you for your interest.  The 2 updates that "failed" were
1.103.468.0 and 1.103.286.0

Please answer all of the following diagnostic questions by number in your very next reply (no need to quote this post):

1. What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your subscription current?  What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?  What third-party firewall (if any)?

2. Has a(nother) Norton application or a McAfee application EVER been installed on this computer?

3. Did a Norton free-trial or a McAfee free-trial [pick one] come preinstalled on the computer when you bought it? (Doesn't matter if you never used or Activated it.)

4. Are ALL of the following updates listed in View installed updates (not Update History)?

    • KB2497640, KB2508272, KB2509553, KB2507618, KB2506223, KB2524375, KB2393802 [and possibly KB976932]

Note:Left to its own devices, Windows Defender will auto-update itself (independent of Automatic Upates and/or Wwindows Update) two times per week:One update is intalled at the beginning of the week (i.e., Monday or Tuesday) then again at the end of the week (typiclly

Sorry for not replying earlier.  Updates worked until this morning when Defender update 1.103.1349.0 said it had failed though showed on the Defender page as having updated.  (Previous updates 682, 900 and 1139 were OK)

1  Mcafee Security Centre only - current.
2 No Norton or other Mcafee
3 McAfee (paid for was pre-installed and then previous sub carried over from old PC)
4 My updates are all up-to-date.
I have NOT got KB2497640 ( I have IE9); KB976932 as my PC was new in March; KB2524375 or KB2393802 - I assume the older ones were put on by Dell prior to shipping.

Thank you for your interest.

I forgot to say that for the Failed Notice in Windows Update the error code was
800705B4.  It advised me to Try Again but there was nothing outstanding to download.

Hope this helps to solve the mystery.

Thank you for this, Jose.   I have made a shortcut of it for future use because I discovered a link to Code 800705b4 which sorted out 2 problems.   I will use your link if this happens again.

I'd very much doubt it, RR!

1a. If you installed IE9 prior to (before) 12 April, KB2482017 should be listed in View installed updates.

1b. If you installed IE9 after 12 April, KB2497640 should be listed in View installed updates.

[Note: KB2497640 will not be offered via Windows Update nor would you be able to install it manually as long as IE9 is install.]

2. Even if SP1 was installed (and you've told us that this is NOT the case), both KB2524375 (released 25 Mar-11) and KB2393802 (14 Feb-11) should be installed.

I have got SP1 - I must have downloaded it when my PC arrived.   I have KB2524375 and KB 2393802.

The only thing that is not there is KB2482017.  I downloaded IE9 on 6 April.

All updates went fine today - I never have had any trouble before it is only the few Windows Defenders that have been an issue of sorts - a sort of false negative.

Maybe using the link to the error code 800705b4 which sorted out 2 unspecified problems will have cured the problem?

Many thanks for your interest, PA Bear
