Windows Defender Blocks All Internet Access. Windows 10. Internet.

Windows Defender Blocks All Internet Access.

Windows 10.

Dell Desktop.

DSL Internet, Ethernet-connected-Modem.

Windows Defender Blocks Microsoft Edge.

Windows Defender Blocks Firefox.

Windows Defender Blocks Skype.

When Windows Defender is turned off, all internet works for all programs.

Windows Defender eventually will turn itself back on and the internet will no longer work.

Dell says it is not their fault.

My modem company says it is not their fault.  I have tried a new modem and it was not the issue.

My phone company that provides DSL internet said it is not their fault.

I replaced the ethernet cable and it was not that either.

I have updated the drivers.

I have re-installed Windows.

I have run an Internet Troubleshooting.

Nothing helps.  But I know Windows Defender is the problem.

I also turn off the firewall too.

Windows Defender has never blocked any of my connections on the 4 Dell systems I have.  McAfee does come with most Dell systems so perhaps it is still active.

If you want to check your Firewall settings, let me know.  If you have Win 10 Pro, use WF.msc in a run box.

Since it appears Defender is associated with your problems, is it giving any notices?  If not, do you have notices turned on?

You say you reinstalled Windows.  That should have reset all your settings and since default settings work for most folks the problem should have stopped.

Is there any chance your system actually has a virus, even after reinstalling Windows?  Are you delaying Windows Updates?

Have you tried bypassing the Router?

Can you turn off any component of Defender, such as the Firewall and regain connectivity?

Have you checked to make sure your network is set as a private network?

Can you open a command prompt or PowerShell and type ping -4 google.com and get responses?

Defender gives no notices.  Notices are turned on.

Windows 10 forces updates now.  I have not delayed any update.  I don't think it is possible to delay an update.  Everything is up to date.

When I turn off the firewall and I turn off Defender, there are zero problems what so ever.

The network is private.

Pinging Google went fine.

If you are still running build 1607, your system is not up to date.  There may be some reason you have not gotten the recent build due to system configuration.

You leave us with nowhere to go for suggestions.  If you clean reinstalled Windows and installed no other software, Defender should work as normal.  If it did not then possibly the install media is corrupted.

If it did not function as a clean install then something else must be involved.  Defender may block the internet if it senses a threat.  There is a setting to stop all traffic on the same settings page as the turn off the firewall.

I cannot find a log for Windows Defender although you may be able to turn on the log for the firewall.  If the firewall was blocking connections, that may tell you what was happening.

Take your system to another location to use a different ISP.  At least that would tell you if it was your particular machine or something involved with your home network configuration.

Thank you so much.

I am trying to download Windows 10 update and it keeps crashing saying I have a network error.

My computer just said 'Critical Process Died' and made me 'reset' windows.  Now I've lost my Firefox and all my bookmarks.

I operate on a DSL modem at 1mbps speed.  Someone said that is too slow.  But why crashing so much?

Thanks so much for all the help!
