Windows Defender 8(8/8.1) vs Windows Defender 10

Can you please let me know the various endpoint security features offered via windows defender 8 and windows defender 10.

I also heard MS is offering ATP support on Windows 8 , so if that is the case, I can buy some time to migrate to windows 10 and still purchase ATP ?

Windows Defender,no matter what version is part of the Default OS files/folders,Windows update requires it's running to operate..defender by itself runs solo, but if one wants more security, download & run Microsoft security response utility.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security/threat-protection/intelligence/safety-scanner-download

This updates defender & a lot more, however the software only lasts 10 days, then a reinstall is needed....

If you have Windows 8, not 8.1, you are in trouble.

Support for Windows 8, including Windows Updates, ended in Jan, 2016.

You were supposed to use the free upgrade to 8.1 for support until 2023.

Here is the Microosoft information about ATP on 8.1:

Announcing: Windows Defender ATP support for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1

Hi Andrew,

I meant to ask...for example in windows defender 8, it comes with AV and F/W, what else can it provide ? similarly, for windows defender 10, does it provide more security features than defender 10....that was my initial question for clarification.

And also coming to my ATP part of the question, I think I can also purchase ATP capability to enhance the security capabilities in addition to windows defender 10 security capabilities. So, does it means if MS provides ATP compatibility with windows 8 OS, does this mean I can wait for another year before I decide to migrate to windows 10 and at the same time Avail ATP features on my windows 8 OS?

ATP is NOT supplied for Windows 8; only 7 and 8.1

You can still upgrade for free from 8 > 8.1

Update to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8

If the above Microsoft method does not work:

Read this information: Windows 8.1 - Update to from Windows 8

Or save your Data and do a clean install of the exact same edition of 8.1 as 8 is.

Windows 8 > 8.1 is a free upgrade released by Microsoft and this is a workaround if you are unable to get it via the Store, etc.

Make sure that you read Section 4 about using generic keys

If you have a retail Windows 8 product key and want to clean install Windows 8.1 or Windows 8.1 Update, then you would need to enter a generic key below to install unactivated with, and change the product key later on in step 22 below to activate with your Windows 8 key.

If you have a retail Windows 8.1 product key and want to clean install Windows 8.1 or Windows 8.1 Update, then you are good.

If you have an OEM Windows 8 product key and want to clean install Windows 8.1 or Windows 8.1 Update, then you would need to enter a generic key below to install unactivated with, and change the product key later on in step 22 below to activate with your OEM Windows 8 COA product key.

If you want to clean installWindows 8 Enterprise, Windows 8.1 Enterprise, or Windows 8.1 Update Enterprise, then you would need to change the product key later on in step 22 below to activate since Enterprise editions do not ask to enter a key at this step.

With Windows 8/8.1 The Product Key on preinstalled Operating Systems (HP, Acer, etc) is embedded in the BIOS in the Motherboard, so that the lost and/or worn C.O.A. Sticker problem is no more.

When you reinstall it will pick up the Product Key and activate the system automatically.

Bill, follow-up clarification

If i have 1000 Windows Workstations with a mix of 8.1 and 10. with defender 8.1 and 10 active on all of those, is there a way to manage all of my workstations centrally via a SaaS console for the overall unified view of what is happening on all my assets or do i have to only depend on SCCM console for that feature?

You are welcome.
