Windows 8.1 starting on a gray screen

Today I received my new Dell with Windows 8.1,  I worked on the set-up with no problem, adding my preferred software.  As a final step, I used the program uninstall to uninstall Taplika and PC Utilities Pro.  I then restarted my computer.  Now I can't get to my start page.  Everything seems normal until I type in my Microsoft password.  Then it goes to a dark grey screen.  The mouse works, but there is nothing on which to click.  If I do control-alt-del, I can log out.  I've had this computer for 5 hours and it is now unuseable.  Any ideas?

even if I tried to restart it with Shift + restart button and went to Safe Mode, there is nothing I can do.

Instead of going to Safe mode try requesting Low res video support.

In fact, if you can do a Ctrl-Alt-Delete you may be able to get into Task Manager that way and start msconfig.exe.  With it you could change your boot options that way instead of having to go into the Advanced Boot Options menu.

In fact, while you are in Task Manager you could check to see if explorer.exe is running.  Restart it if it is.  Use the TM File, New task command to try starting it otherwise.

You are getting a lot further than many others seem to be but maybe your symptom description is just clearer than most.   ; )
