Windows 8 Pro Windows update fails if IPv6 is enabled

Have found that Windows update fails in Windows 8 Pro if IPv6 is enabled. After several minutes of "Checking for Updates", it fails with error code , 0x80072EE2.
Not sure if it is relevant, but in the WindowsUpdate.log this is interesting...

I tried many of the suggestions like repairing windows update components etc, but eventually disabled IPv6 just to try that.

If I disable IPv6 (on the Windows 8 machine), windows update works fine. This was with a clean install.

This does not happen with any of our Windows 7 Pro systems or Windows Server 2008 r2.

Our internet connection is IPv6 enabled and is working.

Hi Mark,

The error message 0x80072EE2 is usually displayed when a process is unable to connect to internet or the internet connection times out. I would suggest you to try and instal

If you’re still facing the issue after running the Fixit, I would suggest you to try the steps mentioned under the resolution section in the above link.

Important Note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

Try these steps and get back to us; we’d be happy to help if you need any further assistance.

The Fixup program does not operate under Windows 8, at least it doesn't come up on the screen and ask if you want to run it as it does on a Windows 7 machine for example.

As described above, this is only a problem if IPv6 is enabled.

I went through the steps in the Resolution section of the link you supplied to ensure I've covered the areas mentioned.

Method A - obviously I have an Internet connection. It works for IPv6 as well (tested using http://ipv6test.google.com/). I can also RDP to the Windows 8 machine using its IPv6 address.

Method B & C- Firewall is on and there are no 3rd party firewalls or anti-virus programs in use. Only using Windows Defender. As I understand it, Microsoft Security Essentials is not used in Windows 8.

Method D - none in use

Method E - already set

Method F - I've assumed BITS is the latest version since I have Windows 8

Advanced Method A - there are no entries in the hosts file

Advanced Method B - no proxy is used (command responds with Direct Access <no proxy server>

Advanced Method C - presumably not applicable since we're not using proxy

Windows Update works fine when IPv4 is the only IP stack.
