Hi garethedensmith,
Thank you for posting your query in the
Microsoft Community Forums. This is issue is a complex one. It can occur due to a number of reasons,
mainly if the hardware (RAM) is not seated properly.
Let us start with a few questions-
1) Is this a laptop or a desktop?
2) Was the RAM installed by you on the computer?
3) Have you made any changes on the computer prior to the issue?
I would like more information regarding the issue.
Let us now perform some troubleshooting steps. All the steps are to be performed systematically and in an order.
Method 1-
Make sure that you have all the updated drivers on the computer.
You can download and install the same from the manufacturer’s website.
Method 2-
I would have you check if the RAM is seated correctly in the slot.
Method 3-
I would have you run the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool.
Refer the steps-
a) Click on “Start” and type “Windows Memory Diagnostic” (without the quotes).
b) Run the tool and check.
Do get back to us and let us know the status of the issue by your next post or in case you need further assistance.
Hope this helps!

Hi,Type in dxdiag and press the Enter key.Now what do you see at Memory column under the System
I Currently Have Windows 8 Pro Installed and for some reason even though i have 4GB RAM installed its only showing 2GB RAM. I have never had this issue with windows 7 Pro 64-bit, and i am a tad bit confused as to why this has started to happen. All was fine until i upgraded to Windows 8 Pro 64-bit. If there is a solution please let me know.
Kind Regards

No, there isn't if you don't have installation media.
Try one of these.. You will be surprised at how easy Windows 8 works with a proper start menu.. My preference is for Start8..
Alternative start menus..
Free..

Costs $5 but is just like Windows 7..

How genius microsoft ? My guess, it is OS problem. Not hardware problem. Same laptop, same RAM, different OS show different RAM usable. Microsoft makes me surprise :)
When i searched in google. I found this site. I don't know whether it work or not. I am not try yet.
