Windows 7 SP1 will not install with error 800B0100

The Problem

Windows 7 SP1 will not install. When I run it via either Windows Update or the standalone installer, I get an error window stating the installation failed with the details "(TRUST_E_NOSIGNATURE) 800B0100".

Additionally, Internet Explorer 9 will not install either, but that is not today's issue.

Background

I previously got error 800B0100 over a year ago when KB977074 failed to install. I went through several Microsoft support calls, with the support tech connecting to my machine remotely and troubleshooting the issue, and he was not able to resolve the issue.

Since then, I was able to install all other updates, but never 977074.

When SP1 came out, I downloaded the latest (updated) version of the manual installer for KB977074, and was able to get it installed.

Nevertheless, I still cannot install SP1.

Troubleshooting

I have tried the following steps over the course of troubleshooting, attempting to install SP1 via Windows Update and the manual installer after each step or after a series of steps.
  1. Completely uninstalled Avira AntiVir anti-virus program.
  2. Ran the System Update Readiness Tool [Feb 2011] v11 multiple times.
  3. Ran the Windows Update Troubleshooter multiple times.
  4. Booted cleanly and killed all unnecessary background processes.
  5. Booted into Diagnostic Startup mode using msconfig.exe, then enabled only the required Windows Update service and its dependencies.
  6. Ran an Upgrade install of Windows 7 from the installation DVD and chose the option to download new installation components. The installation proceeded until the very end, then rebooted. When it booted up, it said the upgrade had failed and Windows was being rolled back to the previous version.
  7. Ran "WUFix-3.0FL.exe" from Microsoft support.
  8. Ran the following per Microsoft support:
    regsvr32 Softpub.dll
    regsvr32 Wintrust.dll
    regsvr32 Initpki.dll
    regsvr32 Mssip32.dll
  9. CheckSUR.log mentions problems with KB978506, which is an IE8 Compatibility View update. When I redownload and run the installer for KB978506 for Win7 x64, it won't install, stating the update does not apply to my computer.

My Machine

  • Windows 7 x64 Pro, clean install
  • No anti-virus

Thanks, but not helpful. See my post. That was the first thing I tried. Same error.

I agree. I've provided as much detail as one possibly could.

If one can't get help when the problem is this clear, what good are these forums?

Windows is now complaining that my installation of Windows is not genuine, and all troubleshooting steps provided to resolve that issue have failed as well. So, I'm edging towards another wasted weekend on a complete reformat and reinstall.

I have (more or less) the same problem when trying to install "Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for x64-based Systems (KB976932)".

I just received an answer that Microsoft will look into this and get back to me. Of course they do not offer any support (unless you pay!), but since they assumed it was a problem with the "Update"-sw they would check it.

I'll update you if MS actually find an answer...

Use the direct link to Download SP1.

Another solution is to download the SP1 and burn the ISO to a disk and then install it.
In fact this method is known to fix a couple of issues, such as the USB bug, that can
affect systems when it is applied via Windows Updates.
