Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit) won't recognize beyond 4GB RAM

I purchased this 64 bit Dell Studio 1555 laptop in October, 2009 - with Windows Vista (64) pre-loaded - intending to soon expand the RAM to its full capacity of 8 GB.  However, at the time of purchase, I bought only 4 GB (two 2GB RAM sticks). During December, 2009, I received and installed the free Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit) upgrade and installed it. Product Key: [No longer visable]  (Also not recognized by the Microsoft Tech Support site)

I just ordered from DELL, two 4GB RAM sticks to expand the RAM to its 8GB capacity although I am having problems.  Having received only one of the two ordered sticks, I installed the new stick and left one of the original 2GB sticks, now having a total of 6GB RAM fully recognized by the BIOS but not recognized at Windows System Information.

I installed the new stick in the upper RAM slot and left the prior 2GB stick in the lower slot.

After booting to Windows, System Information recognizes only 4GB RAM.  Dell advised me to reverse the location of the RAM sticks, so I installed the new 4GB stick in the lower slot and the original 2GB stick in the upper slot.  Upon starting the laptop, Windows still only recognized 4GB RAM instead of the existing 6GB, however the BIOS properly recognized the correct 6GB.

At this point, Dell then said it was a known problem with Windows 7 and I must contact Micosoft for a patch.

Please advise how to contact Microsoft or find the patch that will correct this deficiency.

Thank you.

When you say your key is not recognised by MS support - what do you mean?

It may be an idea to post an MGADiag report in view of that comment, so that we can check why they apparently say that.

The MGADiag tool can be downloaded from here
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

Run it, when complete, hit the Copy button, and paste the result into your response.

hey there, i just spent 4 weeks trying to get my toshiba A200 with 64 bit windows 7 to recognise 4gb after upgrading from 2gb with ZERO luck from any number of forums or download sites.

but hooray all i did was take out both of my 2gb corsair cards and reinstalled them with the sequential numbers lowest to highest to slot A then slot B respectively and restarted laptop.

IT WORKED. system properties now show 4GB RAM

Hope this helps someone out there
