Windows 11 upgrade screensaver problem

Since upgrading to Windows 11 yesterday, screen reverts to screensaver within about 1 minute of inactivity. When mouse etc touched it goes back to screen item. This is really annoying when trying to read a scientific paper or a news item or doing crossword. Sleep settings set to 1 or 2 hrs. Screensaver is slideshow of 42 photos randomly from my computer hard drive set to change every 1 minute. Tried change of this to 10 min but made no difference. Did not have this problem with Windows 10. Was on Live chat to-day for hours to Microsoft Support but the link sent did nothing to correct problem.

Hi EBC. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, specializing in Installation, Performance, Troubleshooting and Activation, here to help you.

Did you try turning off the Screensaver to confirm this is the sole problem?

1) Windows 11 Screensaver is the same one from Windows 7, hasn't been changed at all and isn't supported any longer. But the fixes from Windows 10 should work:

2) The Display driver is so important here that merely updating it is sometimes not enough. So let's try everything possible to get it working correctly:

First make sure you have updated the Display driver from the PC or Display adapter maker's Support Downloads web page for your exact model number, HP Serial Number or Dell Service Tag - from the sticker on the PC.

While there check also for newer chipset, BIOS/UEFI firmware (very important), network, sound, USB3 and other drivers, comparing to the ones presently installed in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start Menu.

Remove the old driver using DDU https://www.wagnardsoft.com/content/ddu-guide-t... if necessary installing in Safe Mode with Networking (so you have internet), or Safe Mode, accessed by one of these methods: https://winaero.com/how-to-boot-windows-11-in-s...

If this doesn't give you the latest or ideal driver for what you need, compare it to the driver offered by the Intel driver update Utility here: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support...

or the Nvidia GeForce scanner here: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Scan.aspx?lang=e...

or the AMD autodect utility here: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/P...

For Display issues one fix that is working is to Roll back or Uninstall the Driver on the Display Device > Driver tab, restart PC to reinstall driver. You can also try older drivers in Device Manager > Display device > Driver tab > Update Driver > Browse > Let Me Pick.

Then you will know you've tried everything in addition to Windows Update drivers.

Adjust the screen resolution until it fits and looks best at Settings > System > Display.

Feel free to ask back any questions. Report back results for more steps if necessary.

Hi Greg,

Thank you so much for your reply. Am grateful for the help as I would really like to have my family & pet photos as shuffled screensaver as I did in Windows 10.

Did set the screensaver to “none” & problem disappeared. Tried setting screensaver to block colour then windows image in case it was  an issue with accessing my  photos – problem recurred with going to screen saver between 55 sec – 1 min of inactivity.

My laptop is HP Omen - 17-an141tx.

Have gone onto HP Support Assistant & there were no software or driver updates

While there ran:

System diagnostics – no issues found

Hardware diagnostics – no issues found

System tests – all passed

Operating system – no issues

On Windows Device manager both Intel (R) HHD graphics 630 and NVIDIA GeForce GTx1050 were “working properly”.

On Task Manager Startup I disabled Cortana since it’s no longer available & I never used it anyway. While there I noticed that HP Omen Gaming Hub Background was disabled. Does this mean anything to do with my problem?

Checked for Windows 11 updates & although it’s less than 2 days since installation there were 3 updates – so I installed these.

Ran Norton Disk optimalisation & File cleanup.

None of the above have made any difference. Screensaver still comes on after <1 min inactivity.

Went into Regedit as suggested in Live Chat yesterday & without changing anything looked around in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\ This has 2 subfiles Audit and UIPI. Pamela yesterday wanted “inactivityTimeOutSecs” – but that does not exist here.

In “lock screen” there is “Value not set” – there is a subfile called “Feed manager”  & it has data of {FE6B11C3-C72E-4061-86C6-9D163121F229}. Could something here be causing my problem?

That’s about the extent of my investigations to date. Can you suggest anything else that will enable me to use a slideshow of my photos as a screensaver but that won’t come on after <1 min of inactivity.

Where are the results for the dozen-plus steps I gave you to try, and was waiting for results to be posted back so I know what else to suggest?

This is an interactive process. I give steps to perform, you do each one and then report back results until something works, so I know what to suggest next. If you need help performing any step, just ask back. But please do not skip any steps. We often find out the skipped step is the fix.

Screensaver is so dated I had to really dig to find those fixes, so to have them completely ignored is very discouraging. Can you go back to the top of the list and work through them now?
