Windows 11 no internet connection on WiFi or Ethernet

My windows 11 pc was turned off for a couple of weeks, since turning it back on I have no internet on either WiFi or Ethernet, I have updated the bios which didn’t change anything, there’s a lot of windows updates that need installing but can’t be installed due to this, I have updated all network drivers, however when trying to troubleshoot network and internet it just comes up saying “this file does not have an app associated with it”. On the taskbar it says connected with internet however it won’t connect and my other pc and all my other devices connect perfectly fine, any help much appreciated, thank you.

Hi FireCobra,

Welcome to Microsoft Community.

We're sorry to hear that you're experiencing issues with your device not being able to access the network.

We understand your frustration. It prevents you from experiencing further network-based services.

Just some things to share with you before dealing with the problem together.

  • We (members of the Answers community) are not developers or direct maintainers of any service or product, we are just regular support staff. We try to provide support based on our limited experience and available information, and limited test equipment.

  • You may notice that the information we provide is sometimes complex and “All-in-One”, because we need to eliminate unnecessary interferences as much as possible to narrow down the scope of the problem analysis.

This file does not have an app associated with it” indicates the possibility of a corrupted user profile and missing system components.

Prolonged computer inactivity may have caused the hardware in your computer to enter a “cool down” state.

The first thing worth checking is any physical buttons on the computer that are associated with the network module.

If you wish, you can try to perform a "clean uninstall process" of the driver and test an earlier version of the driver to check if the problem persists with an "older version" or "older combination". After the driver "package" is removed from the device, the driver cannot be installed by scanning for hardware changes. Please be careful to back up the driver installation files in advance.

You can download the executable driver installation file on your other computers in advance.

To perform a clean uninstall of a driver using Device Manager:

  • Open Device Manager: Press the Windows key, type "Device Manager," and press Enter.

  • Locate the Device: In Device Manager, find the device whose driver you want to uninstall. Expand the category if needed.

  • Uninstall the Device: Right-click on the device and select "Uninstall device".

  • Delete the Driver Software: In the uninstallation window, check the box that says "Delete the driver software for this device" (if available).

  • Confirm and Restart: Click "Uninstall" and then restart your computer.

  • This process ensures that the driver is completely removed from your system.

  • For older versions of the driver, you can visit the device manufacturer's product support site.

Discharging static electricity completely and recharging is a common hardware-level troubleshooting option.

  • On laptops, this may often involve fully charging the battery first and then draining it normally.

  • If you prefer, touching the CMOS battery is another option that can discharge static electricity from your computer, and you can check the device manufacturer's website for more details.

If you are going to modify BIOS Settings, please back up all your personal files first to ensure you do not lose data.

The power state policy may unexpectedly cause incomplete driver initialization, resulting in strange problems.

In the system, fast startup is an option that may be related to the power state.

If you want to disable the S4 state(fast startup) in Windows 10, follow these steps.

  • In search box, type powercfg.cpl and press Enter.

  • Select the Choose what the power buttons do link.

  • (Optionally) Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.

  • Clear the Turn on fast startup (recommended) check box.

  • Select Save Settings.

A local account provides an independent user environment on your device.  Observing under a different user profile helps to understand if the problem is specific to a corrupted user profile. Using Command Prompt ensures you can bypass user interface issues. To create a new local account via Command Prompt:

  • Press Win or Win + S, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.

  • Execute the command to create a new account, replace

    net user "
  • Execute the command to promote the account to admin level, replace

    net localgroup Administrators "

Another way to install Windows updates is to perform an In-place Upgrade.

Given the number of documented issues with Windows 11 24H2, you can prioritize Windows 11 23H2 if you wish.

  • In-place Upgrade

Let’s try performing an in-place install or in-place upgrade which will refresh your Windows files and operating system without removing files or applications. That being said, we always recommend that if you have important data, you should back it up before making large system changes. If you want to back up your data first, please do so. Once you are done backing up, you can follow the steps in the following guides:

Windows 2H24 issue since latest update.

Same problem, suddenly no internet on ethernet or wireless. Fixed it by doing a network reset.

Network & internet >Advanced network settings > Network reset. Process takes about 5 minutes but seems to be only a temporary fix as I've had to do it twice...but it works and gets you back on the net. Wish MS would get on this and repair it.

Good luck...
