Windows 11 Major Performance Issues

After installing the latest update (KB5011493) my system has become incredibly slow and many programs either fail to launch or are unusable. My system is Ryzen based, so I assume it has something to do with the fTPM issue, but the reports of that issue detail “intermittent stuttering” not making the system seem ancient.

Hi and thanks for reaching out. My name is Bernard a Windows fan like you. I'll be happy to help you out today.

I understand the issue you have, nothing to worry I am here to help, I know some of these steps are already done, you have just skipped it if you think it will have the same result.

Method 1. Do clean boot:
A “clean boot” starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs so that you can determine whether a background program is interfering with your game or program.

- In the search box on the taskbar, type msconfig and select System Configuration from the results.

- On the Services tab of System Configuration, select Hide all Microsoft services, and then select Disable all.

- On the Startup tab of System Configuration, select Open Task Manager.

- Under Startup in Task Manager, for each startup item, select the item and then select Disable.

- Close Task Manager.

- On the Startup tab of System Configuration, select OK. When you restart the computer, it's in a clean boot environment.

Method 2. Run memory diagnostic tool: The memory diagnostic tool is a RAM test to check if there are any issues with RAM.

- Press Windows key + R then type in mdsched.exe hit OK then restart the device.

Let me know how does it go and I hope that helps.

I skipped over the step of hiding Microsoft services, and I stopped those as well. I can’t log in now, what service do I have to re-enable via command prompt?

Hi thanks for the detailed reply, first, we need to go to Windows recovery mode and try the options there:

Restart the device 3-5 times until I reach Windows recovery mode, wherein you have an option to select Continue, Troubleshoot, or Exit.

Or try to Press and hold the Shift key while continuously pressing F8 while starting the PC

Then on Windows Recovery:

Do system Restore:

Click Troubleshoot> Advanced options> System restore - Follow the prompt and choose the date where it was working fine.

Ended up rolling back to right before the update, performed original steps again without being a fool. Clean boot environment cleared up the issue almost entirely, memory test resulted in no issues being found.

Yes it is, would my next course of action be re-enabling each service to determine the culprit?

Hi Dallas. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, specializing in Installation, Performance, Troubleshooting and Activation, here to help you.

I'm not sure where the other Advisor went but I'll answer your question so you don't experience another crisis from one of the steps you are given here.

Generally you only need the Windows Security notification icon and OneDrive if you use them, to Start with Windows. Anything else is optional; I would ask if you absolutely need it to be running when Windows starts, or can you wait until you open it?

For example some want Facebook Messenger on standby but then it can cause issues at times so it's best to start it yourself if you need it.

Many drivers will install bloatware that works its way into the Startup list under the guise of Updaters, which is almost never needed unless you need the driver software to hold in place certain settings that WIndows cannot.

If you notice some function missing associated with one of the startups you disabled in Task Manager > Startup or msconfig > Services after selecting Hide all MS Services, you can enable it to see if that is better.

There is more in this best tutorial about WIndows 11 Clean Boot:

Feel free to ask back any questions. Based on the results you post back I may have other suggestions if necessary.

Completely forgot to reply, turns out after restoring from a restore point created before the update it was not that at all, but ZoneAlarm. Apparently there's some sort of issue in its latest version with Windows 11, and removing it fully fixed the issue.
