Windows 11 is automatically disabling services once game is launched

Hi,
I recently updated to Windows 11. Everything was okay until I found that once I launch a game (Dota 2 in particular) my bluetooth headset stops receiving any sound after a while (30 seconds into the game lobby). I started debuging and I found in the Event Viewer -> Windows Logs -> System Several services are beeing disabled Service Control Manager with eventID 7040, including bluetooth related services once the game is Launched. After I stop the game everything is back to normal.

I tried enabling the services, automatic troubleshooting uninstalling and installing the game, cleaning some old registry keys. Did a scan for viruses and so on... Everything looks normal.

Any suggestions how I can fix this as it is very annoying?

Kind regards,

Hi DD. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, specializing in Installation, Performance, Troubleshooting and Activation, here to help you.

How did you clean old registry keys? You do realize that Registry Cleaners are the worst thing you can do to WIndows? If not then I'd System Restore to before you used it as it will ruin Windows very quickly.

Are there any other mods at all? This is the kind of problem that can come from optimizing suites, registry cleaners and Windows mods. What matters in WIndows is the quality of the underlying install, then built-in maintenance is enough.

Try reinstalling the Bluetooth driver in Device manager > Bluetooth device > Driver Update > Uninstall, restart PC to reinstall.

Based on the results you post back I may have other suggestions if necessary.

Hi Greg,

Thanks for replying. I did uninstall the driver many times. Unfortunatelly it did not fix the issue. I know that registry cleaners are not a good approach. But that was suggested to a similar problem that i found on the internet. I have also reinstalled other drivers such as the audio driver and so on ... Nothing fixed the issue. Still after I launch the game after roughly 30 seconds the sound is back to the speakers of the laptop instead of the headphones. the only thing that is happenning are the services that are beeing disabled during by the Service Control Manager. Once I stop the game, the same services are back to normal. Looks like somekind of optimization is happening behind the scenes.

Much appreciated your help.

Kind Regards,

Hi again -

I'll give you the fixes which work best for headset problems which we see a lot of here:

First try the steps here:

Go to Settings > Devices > Autoplay to look for the device and change the default behavior in it's Dropdown Menu.

Right click Volume icon in System Tray at right end of task bar, Open Sounds Settings, in dropdown menus at top make sure Headphones are selected and Connected for both Playback and Recording Default Devices.

If not again right click Volume icon in System Tray to choose Troubleshoot sound problems.

See all ways (including manufacturer-specific) to re-enable the "Which device did you plug in" popup which can solve headset issues:

Go to the Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start button, choose Sound controller device, on Driver tab choose Roll back or Uninstall, restart PC using keyboard to Ctrl Alt Del, on blue screen tab to Power Icon in bottom right, press Enter, arrow down to Restart, press Enter to restart to reinstall the driver.

Do the same for the headset device and/or it's microphone.

Update the Sound driver from the PC or Device maker's Support downloads web page. While there also check that the Chipset, BIOS, Display, USB, Network and all other drivers are the most current.

Sometimes it helps to unpair or disconnect all other Bluetooth devices from the PC in Bluetooth settings, then try again to connect the headset.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Hi Greg,

Sorry for the late reply.
I did most of the things suggested above. Majority of the suggestions are related to the case when the headphones are not working at all. In my case they do work properly. Its just when I launch the game that they stop working after a while. I did several changes based onto the above, the best that I was able to do is to make them work during the game was on, but then the sound quality was terrible. I found a youtube video that suggested to disable one of the Bluetooth

Also found similar issue:

https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/windows-insider-program/windows-11-bug-issue/m-p/2786091/highlight/false#M9939

Additional information which I think is the root cause:

Once I start the game i found the following int he Event viewer:
The start type of the AVCTP service service was changed from demand start to disabled.

Which is the main reason why the sound is stopping while im in the game. Once I manually start it then the sound is back.

Any idea what can trigger this?

Kind Regards,

"The start type of the AVCTP service service was changed from demand start to disabled."

Its possible for other reasons.

There's actually multiple stuff on services and might go way over your head but if you want to narrow it down further...

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/services/the-complete-service-sample

Anyway, 'If the service is disabled successfully, Startup Type is set to "Disabled".' So something is disabling it and so the message you received is the result. Again, not necessarily Windows.

This is under Apps (aka Application development)

  1. Win32

  2. Desktop Technologies

  3. System Services

  4. Services

To add further, it should be possible to just set the type to disable from the registry which anything can do that. "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\BthAvctpSvc"

So it may not be that straightforward as blaming Windows. It is a Windows supplied service though so could be that it has an issue on Windows 11. I just don't think its known at this point where the issue is coming from. Could be optimization software even though or Windows detects a problem with the BT driver or hardware and sets it to disabled.
