Windows 11 24H2 update space issue

Hello,

I am having a terrible time trying to get Windows to update,I keep getting "Needs more space" and I have done everything to clean out room for this update, but no matter what, it stops and tells me to keep clearing it out.

I've done the cmd prompts to stop and start and clear out the systemupdate and catroot2...I've even deleted some apps, I'm losing my mind with this.

How much free space do you have on your PC?

For a successful upgrade to 24H2, you need at least 20GB of free space on your disk.

Hi, I am Dave, I will help you with this.

For the 24H2 update, you would need at least 40GB of space on the C drive, because the old Windows installation will be copied into a Windows.Old folder, the update donwlaod requires 8GB of space and also some space for temporary files to move data around in..

Click the link below to download a small free utility named Treesize.

https://www.jam-software.com/treesize_free

Very Important - to run TreeSize, you must right click its icon and choose Run as Administrator.

Please provide a screenshot of your C drive in that TreeSize utility, so I can see your hard drive and work out where that space is being used and if there is an underlying problem.

Hello,

It varies because of the cache folders, I clean them out and it gives me enough space until I go to update, then it fills again and says I don't have enough space. So it will give me anywhere between 10 to 30 GB until the update starts.

I also have a 64GB thumb drive, but when I click on it to use, it won't recognize it, even though it is on the drop down.

The only place I see on your drive where you may be able to get some space is in the Users folder, check in there with TreeSize to see if there are any files you can move out onto a USB drive temporarily, you will then have enough space for the update and can move them back after the update.
