Windows 10 - Windows Media Player

Hi

seeking to know why the CD/DVD drive is not displayed in Windows Media Player

The drive appears when i insert a Music CD but not when i insert a DVD

I have no problem playing the DVD through Nero Kwiks media player, no problem

Any help would be appreciated

Bugstein79

Hey Bugs. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 9 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

They removed the DVD player from WIndows 10. They want you to buy one from the Store but it's not as good as the free choices, especially VLC: http://www.pcworld.com/article/2953724/windows/...

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Hey Bugstein79,

I hate to say it but DVDs are not supported on Windows Media Player anymore, unfortunately... they delegate that responsibility to a different app called Windows DVD Player on the Microsoft Store, which is $14.99. Consider keeping on using Nero Kwiks or VLC Media Player.

I hope this helps.

For all audio and video playback
Install shark007 advanced codecs
close 64bit settings app
select shark007 suggested settings in 32bit settings app
close out

Go to Settings>>Apps>>Default apps
select windows media player for default player for audio and video

start menu>>all apps
locate windows media player and pin to taskbar
restart PC

Now you can play every audio and video file in WMP. Shark007 is the best in the world. Never a problem again playing files. Even DVD, BlueRay and 4K videos. It is free and no malware. Been using it on mine and customers PC's for almost 20 years since XP.

One question, is it a CD or DVD player

Because a CD player cannot read a DVD

If it is a DVD player, and your CD/DVD drive is installed properly (Driver) and it will not play any disks, then your CD/DVD player is either no good, (JUST SPINS THE DISK) or the CD's/DVD's are bad. I have had many disks that would not work and others would, (Brand or types of disks). I have also had CD/DVD players fail and had to replace them.

Can you put in a CD that will install a program, and see if it runs.

Also, do you have AUTO RUN selected when inserting a disk.

You make these settings here.

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\AutoPlay

Then when you insert the disk, it boots itself and starts playing. If this is not set to auto run, then it will not play unless you access the CD/DVD folder and manually start it.

Next, open Windows Media Player.

select the TOOLS tab>>Options>>Devices Tab

DO YOU SEE A CD or DVD drive here ????

Hi RS Z28

Just to clarify, I do know the difference

Computer is a ASUS ROG Strix with a DVD Burner

this is the 4th computer, that I have built for myself

Problem is as follows

Windows XP & Windows 7 could play DVD's through Windows Media Player but only after installing/adding a specific codec(Not sure which 1)

Nero was the option I used as it has the codec built in for its own DVD player & burner

Now I have upgraded to Windows 10, I have 3 issues with Windows Media Player

1st was, CD drive is not fixed in the WMP library menu

it does appear when cd is inserted but not when DVD is inserted (Not a big problem)

2nd was finding Album info, was redirected to XBOXlive for some unknow reason and error searching for music info

That problem is fixed  (link to solution below if it helps anyone)

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/windows-media-player-with-wrong-find-album-info/7bbb8f87-8ff6-4eb2-81d0-34da3229d318

My next problem was, Windows Media Player will not play DVD,s even after installing the Nero

I can play CD's through WMP, and the DVD's do play through Nero Kwik media

Basically I just want 1 program I can play music and DVD's through as I have done in the past

Real simple. Shark007 codecs will play all audio and video format files. This includes DVD, Blue Ray, HEVC 4K all in Windows media player.

You will never need any other codecs.

You will never need any other media player, other then Windows Media Player.

---------------

For all audio and video playback
Install shark007 advanced codecs
Close the 64bit settings app
Select shark007 suggested settings in the 32bit settings app
Close it out

Go to:

Settings>>Apps>>Default Apps
Select Windows Media Player for default player for audio and video.

Start Menu>>All Apps
Locate Windows Media Player, Right Click>>More>>Pin to Taskbar
Restart PC

Now you can play every audio and video file in WMP. Shark007 is the best in the world. Never a problem again playing files. Even DVD, BlueRay and 4K videos. It is free and no malware. Been using it on mine and customers PC's for almost 20 years since XP.

It even provides nice Thumbnail previews in Explorer, as Shark007 installs Icaros. You can access Icaros by opening up the Shark007 64bit settings app and opening up Icaros.

But the default settings for it is fine as it is.

You must always open Shark007 Settings >> RUN AS ADMIN to make any changes.

Shark007 is located in Start Menu>>All Apps>>Shark007 Codec’s.

Right Click>>More and Run as Admin or Open File Location and send shortcut to desktop. Then right click on them and Run as Admin.

 Enjoy!

The creator of Shark007 does not pay to register it because nobody donates enough money to him. It is expensive to register and he has never registered it. All programs that are made, if they do not pay Microsoft to register it, then you could get the message that it could be harmful when you download the file. This is how Microsoft makes more $$$.,

Shark has been out for almost 20 years. It is the most popular and used codec pack in the world.

Shark007 has been scanned with McAfee and is 100% safe and no malware.

You can also search the web for anything that says Shark007 is unsafe or has any malware. Good luck on that.

If you get an UNSAFE MESSAGE for the downloaded Shark007 Installer file, then do the following:

Open Defender>>App & Browser control>>Turn all 3 OFF and restart PC

Download the file

Right click on file and select properties and select Unblock and apply

Move the file to desktop

Open Defender>>App & Browser control>>Turn all 3 ON

Install shark and set it up and restart PC
