(Windows 10) Windows Explorer Keeps Crashing

Hi,

For a while now in windows 10, Windows explorer will keep on crashing for various reasons, when I open files in notepad, open certain folders, open certain files, etc. It used to completely reboot the shell, but now that I've clicked the option for Explorer to open separate processes, it just crashes the open window.

Here is the !analyze -v of the dump file of one of the crashes. Let me know if I need to provide any other information:

This dump file has an exception of interest stored in it.
The stored exception information can be accessed via .ecxr.

Joost Ziff,

We appreciate you brought this issue to us. We hope that the community will be able to informatively help you at its best. And if you would allow me, please let me be the first one.

The !analyze -v you've provided from the crash log is very helpful. But can you clarify, when the Windows Explorer (aka -File Explorer) crashes, does it give a complete system crash with a blue screen error?

Going back to the !analyze -v you've provided, the crash log point to the msvcrt.dll - a library component of Visual C++. This program may come from another program that will require a certain version of Visual C++. Therefore, you can resintall by running the Visual C++ redistributable that you recently installed.

Meanwhile, you can isntall the redistributable files from this link, depending on the Visual C++ that you have: The latest supported Visual C++ downloads.

If you would like me to provide additional advice, simply respond to this thread. I will get notified and I’ll reply to you as soon as I can.

Best.

Dear Marc,

To be clear, this is not a blue screen crash. Rather, the open Windows Explorer closes and (if the processes are not separated) the Windows Shell crashes and reboots (as can be seen when the pinned icons disappear and then reappear on the task bar.

I'll try reinstalling visual C++ and see what that does. (I seem to have several versions installed that the game app Steam installed when installing specific games).
