windows 10 upgrade Sound Blaster X-Fi Extreme Music no sound unable to detect supported product

Finally - successfully upgraded to W10 (after days of incorrect messages being received in "Windows Update"

Before Windows 10 - I  was on Win  8.1, my sound worked,  but I had to go to the (Sound Blaster)  X-Fi XtremeMusic - Creative Sound Console app and then clicked on the "Default button"  - I got the sound going again but every time I shut down I had to repeat the process, but lived with it.

Now with Windows 10 - when I click on the (Sound Blaster) Creative Sound Console app I get "ensure the product is properly installed before running the Setup program" and "Setup unable to detect a supported product on your system"

I have also subsequently gone to Dell support (my PC) which is seven years old and had Sound Card preinstalled - the automated support comes back: Dell (for this product) does not support W10 but does for XP and Win 2000 but Dell preloaded with Vista (which obviously worked then)!  I updated to W7 and again, sound system  was perfect.

Now with W10 everything works except sound as noted above Device manager saying my driver "is up to date" (but can't be).

also received the following from MS Support

Applies to Windows 10

Make sure you have a sound card or processor and it's working.

  • Open Start, enter Device Manager, and select it from the list of results. Under Sound, video, and game controllers, select your sound card, open it, select the Driver tab, and select Update Driver. If Windows doesn't find a new driver, look for one on the device manufacturer's website and follow their instructions.

  • If you can't update via Device Manager or find a new driver on the manufacturer's website, try uninstalling your audio driver by opening Device Manager, right-clicking (or tapping and holding) the audio driver, and selecting Uninstall. Restart your device and Windows will attempt to reinstall the driver.

  • If reinstalling the driver doesn't work, then try using the generic audio driver that comes with Windows. Here's how: in Device Manager, right-click (or tap and hold) your audio driver > Update driver software... > Browse my computer for driver software > Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer, select High Definition Audio Device, select Next, and then follow the rest of the instructions to install it.

Still need help? Connect with a Microsoft Answer Tech

I have gone through the above steps, especially the last but didn't match exactly "High Definition Audio Device" but said Microsoft Generic" so used that but didn't work.

Spent last couple of days going around in circles using the internet.

Definitely don't want to use open source type drivers that say - "at your own risk" or anything as such.

Has anyone got the same sound card/same problem and resolved it???

Wonderful it would be to hear from you.

Thank you very much indeed.

Hello TheSamantha

I had to revert to the "Generic driver" sadly but it does work (so good bye to the SB Sound Panels!

The solution is as the link to website in the above email from Microsoft and here is the how to "generic bit" from MS

---------

If that didn't work, try using the generic audio driver that comes with Windows. Here's how: in Device Manager, right-click (or tap and hold) your audio driver > Update driver software... > Browse my computer for driver software > Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer, select High Definition Audio Device, select Next, and follow the instructions to install it.

-------

Hello, if you guys are still having issues with your Sound Blaster X-Fi sound cards in Windows 10.

Have you tried using the custom sound card support pack?

Google search for support pack 3.7 and if those don't work, try using 3.8 SE.

Don't use version 3.8 SE, without trying 3.7 first, as I only use 3.7 and they have more features, also 3.7 is much larger in size, so it has better support for your sound card.

http://danielkawakami.blogspot.com/2015/09/sb-x-fi-series-support-pack-37.html

Make sure to read down through it first, in that link.

This should work for most sound cards, if not, try checking for new sound card drivers.

Those were supposed to be the last supported by the user that made the custom sound card drivers, but it looks like there might be some new ones. Though.. because there was info on it being the last supported version as 3.7, I didn't think to check.. I checked several times in 2016 but that was about it, in 2017 I didn't check because I figured that was all there was going to be since it said the last supported final version was 3.7, with the 3.8 SE being some off drivers that don't work properly for my sound card, and the size of the download was very small.

For the 3.8 SE custom sound card drivers pack, here's the link if you're curious.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4veZnyFbxW4UlFuVzh3ME91TGM/view

Here's a link for the forum thread with him in it from 2015, make sure to read through it to the last page.

http://forums.creative.com/showthread.php?t=741367

If those don't work, use version 3.7, and if you have a different sound card that doesn't work with 3.7, try checking the blogs to the right of the webpage in the link for version 3.7, the first link at the top. :)

The blogs to the right, should show different version in 2015 for other sound card types, and some drivers in 2017, be sure to check them out.

Such as the Sound Blaster Audigy SE series sound card, here are the custom sound card support pack drivers version 6.1.

Be sure to read all through his first comment, all the way to the bottom of it, before downloading anything, or installing anything.

http://forums.creative.com/showthread.php?t=723431

Here are the Sound Blaster Audigy SE series sound card custom support pack drivers version 6.2, that came out in 2017, if these don't work, try the link above.

http://danielkawakami.blogspot.com/2017/01/sb-audigy-series-support-pack-62.html

Looks like a newer version came out, version 4.0 and 4.0 SE for 2017, though.. I haven't tested these yet, but I can guarantee that the 3.7 drivers in the link, should work just fine, and installing an updated Windows Update of a new Windows 10 build version, should also have any fixes since then for the sound card, you won't need to re-install the sound card drivers from 3.7, even with a new build update, as long as the drive wasn't formatted, or you didn't do a Windows 10 refresh / reset and so on. This should fix your issue with version 3.7, I'm going to test version 4.0 and see if they work, but again.. version 3.7 works just fine. :)

It should work for almost all sound cards with version 3.7, if not.. try the 3.8 SE.

Haven't had to update from the sound card support pack version 3.7 in years, had no issues so far, and sounds great. :)

My sound card is the Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtremegamer Fidelity Professional Series sound card, had to use the custom drivers to use the sound card in Windows 10 when it came out in 2015 for users to use. :)

Though keep in mind, these sound card custom support pack drivers, are supposed to work on a number of sound cards, so try them out starting with 3.7, keep version 3.7 as a backup after downloading, and try the support pack 4.0 after testing 3.7 and so on. :)

When testing other sound card support pack drivers, be sure that it removes any old sound card support pack drivers before or during install of any new sound card support pack drivers. I'm sure it will automatically update with no issues, but always be sure it removed anything old or rather, from a previous version installed, rather newer or not.

Here are the USB Sound Blaster Support Pack drivers, if that's what you have.

http://forums.creative.com/showthread.php?t=717050

Be sure to check for new sound card custom driver versions, that might not be the latest version and don't know for the USB Sound Blaster series, hope that works for your sound card.

For testing the Sound Blaster X-Fi sound card custom drivers version 4.0, here is the link.

Again if these don't work right, you can revert back to version 3.7 and that should work just fine. :)

http://danielkawakami.blogspot.com/2017/01/

And here is the link for the sound card custom support drivers version 4.0 SE, again.. it might be like with version 3.7 and 3.8 SE, so be sure to test both 4.0 and 4.0 SE to see what works best, keep in mind that one set of sound card drivers could be missing features, and / or the size could be different of the download.

http://danielkawakami.blogspot.com/2017/01/sb-x-fi-series-support-pack-40-se.html

And here are some other kinds of drivers for other sound cards not Creative related, from 2017.

Such as the Asus Xonar, and other C-Media Oxygen HD cards.

http://danielkawakami.blogspot.com/2017/01/updated-windows-10-drivers-for-asus.html

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Install instructions for your version 3.7 sound card drivers. -

With the sound card drivers custom support pack version 3.7, I install most (specific) features and the Creative Console Launcher.

Then after restarting the PC, I right click the sound icon near the desktop clock, at the bottom right corner of the desktop screen in Windows 10, or 7, and if you have a digital sound card, this is what you do after installing the sound card drivers.

Right click the sound icon mentioned, then click on (Playback Devices) > click on Speakers or whatever your sound card name is for the x-fi, then select the default button if it isn't already set. After that, go into the properties by right clicking or double clicking, from the Speakers / Sound Card name under Playback Devices.

Select Custom > and then check the (Enable Digital IO).

Press the OK button twice to close out of everything.

Your sound card now has sound, especially if it was digital. :)

Ok now find and open your Creative Console Launcher.

I set these because it sounds great!

Select the tab in the Creative Console Launcher called (X-Fi Crystalizer) and enable it. Don't mess with the bar, it should be in the middle.

Next select the tab (EQ) > and enable it, if it isn't. It should be set by default to (EQ Flat). Set it to (EQ Classical). Wait a moment for the drive to stop loading with everything set. Now close out of the Creative Console Launcher, by clicking the X on the top right corner.

Be sure to restart the PC asap, so that it saves the settings, for everything you set, this will save what you set absolutely, for the Creative Console Launcher and so on.

Ok so very simple, just enable your digital sound, next time you need to know, and the settings from the Creative Console Launcher, 2 easy steps for next time, using the steps I provided. :)

Once you have it down, it's very easy to do, and very quick. :)

As you can see, there are sound card drivers which should work for most sound cards, all in one comment. :)

I hope this helps you, again try using the custom support pack version 3.7 if other sound card drivers don't help you.
