Windows 10 Upgrade: DVD drive not working, only functioning as CDROM

Hello everyone, I'm looking for some help with a problem which has presented itself following a Windows 10 Upgrade on my laptop.

Long story short, I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 on my Gateway P-79 Laptop.    Following the upgrade everything seemed to be working until I put a DVD disk into the LG model GT80N DVD Drive installed.  The drive is not the original drive that came with the computer, but it was working on Windows 7 for months.  Each time I put a DVD in the computer acted like it was trying to read what was on the disk, but was unable to.  The computer would even freeze somewhat each time, until I ejected the disk.

I have researched this issue up one side and down the other, here's what I've found so far and what I've tried:

  • The drive is recognized by Windows in device manager, but only as a CD-ROM drive (see screenshot)
  • Windows 7 and 8 had a Microsoft "fix it" available for this issue, but it's unavailable for use on Windows 10 (Link below)
  • Several driver update applications recognize the DVD hardware driver as up-to-date.
  • I've tried uninstalling the device driver from Device manager, and having it re-recognized... Issue remains unresolved

UPDATE (08-13-2015, 11:30 PM): Problem persists.  At the request of another forum user I attempted to load a DVD disk in SAFE mode.  The drive was still being treated as a CDROM and couldn't successfully load the DVD disk.

Just noticed the Microsoft Engineer's reply, will be attempting a Command Prompt CheckDisk Diagnostic next...  Stay tuned, will keep you updated.

Update 2 (08/13/2015, 11:40 PM): Attempted to run CHKDSK using Administrator mode in Command prompt.  Results displayed in screenshot below.  Reports system functioning properly... Problem persists.

Will begin diagnostic plan C, prayer...  for a Hotfix... O.o

Update 3 (08/14/2015, 05:25 PM) - At the request of community user Auggy, uploading a screenshot of the Device Manager window showing expanded sections IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers & Storage Devices.

UPDATE 4 (08/15/2015, 01:00 PM) - Per request from community user Auggy, I uninstalled Daemon Tools Lite, restarted the computer, and tried loading a DVD Disk again.  Operations were completed, but the Problem Persists...

Screenshot showing DVD drive attempting to load inserted Disk, unsuccessfully.

I'm sorry to hear that Sparkyil, it's certainly been frustrating for me.  My attempts to fix the issue have been all for naught, so far.  Please keep me (us, the collective community) updated if you find a solution to the problem.

Sincerely,

Kris

Hi Auggy,

Yes, the problem persists when I use safe mode.  The computer still seems to read the drive as a CDROM only drive, and attempts to load the disk but is unable.

Sincerely,

Kris
