Windows 10 updates are causing font and graphics scaling issues

After a recent Windows 10 update, most of my apps now have font or graphics scaling issues.

Another windows update a few days ago, temporarily fixed the problem, then a new update brought this scaling problem back.

I use a laptop, with an external HDMI display.

Windows is configured to duplicate the displays.

The scaling issue is affecting all Adobe products (photoshop, premiere, etc.), Android Studio, and many others.

The apps are scaled tiny, as if my display was 4K.

My app's splash screens are tiny.

Microsoft's "OpenFileDialog" common dialog fills the screen, with huge fonts, when displayed by an app or browser.

Could this be a GetSystemMetrics( ) issue?

What type of graphics card do you have installed?

Have you tried updating the driver directly from nVidia or AMDs website?

I have: NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M

I did not attempt to do any updates since Microsoft has been updating Windows several times over the past week.

Scaling problems started after a major Windows 10 update last week.

Its been a major problem for a lot of users lately. The only way to correct it is to manually uninstall then display driver then download the appropriate driver from the manufacturers website or nVidia's website.

Hi Ron. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 8 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

First try all fixes for Display adapter being messed up by Windows Update:

Check for a newer Display driver on the PC or Display adapter Support Downloads webpage. While there check if there are other newer drivers to Update, including BIOS, Chipset, Sound, Network, USB3, Bluetooth and all others. Compare to the one present installed in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start Menu.. You can take your time until they are all updated.

There is a known issue of incorrect Display driver being pushed by Windows Update which requires rolling back the driver. Right click Start to open Device Manager, choose Display device, then Driver tab, then Roll back.

If there is no Roll Back or that doesn't help choose Update Driver on Display device Driver tab, then Browse Computer, then Let Me Pick to see a list of all previously installed Display drivers, work backwards trying each to find one that works.

If necessary you can also go to Settings>Update & Security>Windows Update to look for the driver under Installed Updates and Uninstall it form link there. Then you can hide the driver so it isn't pushed again using the Hide Updates tool downloaded from here: http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/2/2/f2...

If none of those work try to System Restore to a point before the problem began: http://home.bt.com/tech-gadgets/computing/how-t.... Make sure System Restore is always enabled for C with plenty of disk space apportioned (5-10%) in its Configuration settings.

NEXT: You can roll back Fall Creators Update Version 1709 to the older version until it matures: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/rollback-uninstal...

Then block the version Update until it matures:

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

The driver date is 5-1-2017.

Does that mean it has not been recently updated?

Hi Ron.

I'd need to know your PC make/model and the Display device as there are thousands.

But you can go to the PC's Support Downloads web page yourself and look for the latest Display driver to download and install. This is standard maintenance that everyone should learn so you know you have your PC or Device's latest drivers installed for best performance. Windows Update will deliver some of them but lately has been erring at that. So its best to check yourself.

I have a 2013 Macbook Pro Retina, running Windows on a BOOTCAMP partition.

Apple provides a software update tool. I checked it but nothing related to the display, just a WIFI driver.

I suggest asking for Support from Apple or it''s Genius bar which is the equivalent to Microsoft physical Store techs or MVP's. I am a Windows-only guy.

Problem Solved.

I found a forum where several people posted similar solutions, for font and graphics scaling issues.

I opened the Windows "Display settings" window.

(The font and resolution settings were correct.)

I temporarily changed both the font and resolution, then switched back to the original settings.

Signed out.

Logged in.

Scaling issues fixed!

Shutdown the laptop, then restarted, and scaling issues are still fixed.

Now, I remember, years ago, doing this exact same procedure on earlier versions of Windows, on my old DELL PC, to fix scaling issues.

Maybe it is some type of legacy "registry issue", that has continued to migrate to new versions of Windows?
