Windows 10 Update/Avast Anti-Virus

I`ve been trying to update my Windows 10 with the latest version but halfway through the download, a separate window will open saying that I need to uninstall Avast Antivirus as it`s no longer compatible. I haven`t had Avast on this PC for years and its not in the list of apps nor in the Control Panel

I`ve tried using Avast Clear but that doesnt stop the message from re-appearing when I try to start the update again. I even tried resetting the PC but that didnt work either.

I`m at the end of my tether here as I have spent three days trying to update, the download process is OK until the Avast message appears but then the download justs virtually grinds to a halt, I`m talking hours to move on just 1%!

I even had one of the Microsoft Assistants take remote control of my PC but guess what, that didnt work either

Any help well appreciated.

Hi Stephen. I'm Greg, an installation specialist, 10 year Windows MVP, and Guardian Moderator here to help you.

That's the buggy Windows Update Assistant which can interpret a download in the Downloads folder as being installed. I would avoid the Asst and also buggy WIndows Updates and manually upgrade to the latest version 1903 by opening the Media Creation Tool from this link: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/m..., choose Download Tool Now, then open the tool and choose Upgrade This PC Now. This saves your files, apps and most settings in place, is the most stable method to change versions, brings your Updates current, resolves most problems.

If any problems report back the verbatim error and number, then continue with these steps for overcoming Version Upgrade problems: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

If the Version has problems I will work with you to try to resolve them. If the problems are intractable, you have ten days to roll it back in Recovery settings.

Most problems are resolved by doing this gold standard Clean Install which should get you past all difficulties as it has millions of others who have followed the steps in this link and never come back to report another problem: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki... . So read it over and see if its something you want to learn to do.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted. If you'll wait to rate whether my post helped you, I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Hi Stephen

Please try this fix:

Click the link below to download a zip file

https://aka.ms/AppRPS

Unzip that file

Double click appraiser.bat to run that batch file

That batch will find the blocking file - delete the blocking file

Then try running the update again . . .

Greg

I have tried that too and I still get the "uninstall Avast Antivirus" message. In the end, I will quit the download as nothing appears to be happening. It then says "Something went wrong. Here is the error code 0xc1900209.

Hope that means more to you than me!

When was the last Clean Install? The reason I ask is because no one who has followed the illustrated steps in this link which compile the best possible Clean Install has ever come back (that I've seen) to report another problem: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki.... It is a better install than any amount of money could buy and a great learning experience that will make you permanently the master of your PC because you will know what works best and have applied it with your own hands.

Short of that there is an automated Refresh that reinstalls WIndows while shedding corrupting factory bloatware, saves only your files, but doesn't clear the drive to get it cleanest: https://www.howtogeek.com/265054/how-to-easily-...

I'm having the same problem as Stephen and have tried everything to figure out how to get Windows to update, aside from a clean install, which I REALLY cannot do; I would lose some programs that I cannot live without.

I tried running the appraiser.bat file myself and it wouldn't let me delete the offending file. This is what I ended up with:

I'm trying to do an in place upgrade to refresh my windows 10 on an old computer without losing apps and data.

I get the upgrade or remove Avast message that won't let me go any further. Using media creation tool from usb stick.

I have used the Avast removal tool on all listed versions, have installed and removed the free version, but still get this error. Help!  I haven't used Avast for years.

Regarding the OP topic - Doing an Windows version update and Avast not being listed in Programs and Features or Apps & Features...

- Try reinstalling Avast. The uninstall tool may not work as well on leftover files\registry keys as it would with a full install.

If you were using 32bit Avast previously use that version. Reboot and use the Avast uninstall tool to uninstall Avast again. Reboot.

- If you were to use Avast again you would want to install the 64bit version when using Win10.

- When I first upgraded Win7 (installed in 2010) to Win10 I had to upgrade Avast (free version) from 32bit to the 64bit version

before doing the upgrade, but I haven't had any issues with Avast blocking any of the version updates since that time ( Sept 2015).

Had a few false positives recently though. Win10 still runs as well as day one 'upgrade' too.
