Windows 10 Update - USB 2.0 ports not working

I installed Win 10 on Aug 10. And I got an update on the 11th. After that my USB 2.0 ports X2 won't work. My mouse was on one and now the system makes constant chimes like it is constantly being plugged in and out. I confirmed this by witnessing it being connected and disconnected every 1/2 sec. in the devices window. I had to switch the mouse to a 3.0 port for it to work, also I plugged my Samsung galaxy 4s phone in and it won't recognize it in the 2.0 ports and states that in a message.

I'm using an MSI laptop GP60 2PE Leopard and would like my 2.0 ports back.

If you need more details I can provide.

Hi Kanuck,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

Regrets the inconvenience caused.

If your high-speed USB 2.0 ports don't work, you might not have the correct driver installed for the ports in your computer, or the ports might be defective. If you are using an external USB hub plugged into your computer, this might also be defective or lack the proper drivers. Check Device Manager to see if your USB ports or hubs are working properly.

  1. Open run command by pressing Windows key + R and type “devmgmt.msc” (without quotes) and hit Enter.

  2. Double-click Universal Serial Bus controllers and check to see if all your USB ports, hubs, and controllers are functioning correctly. Any devices not functioning will have a yellow exclamation mark in front of them.

  3. If Device Manager shows any USB ports, hubs, or controllers are not functioning, check for updated drivers.

  4. Right click and select “Update Driver Software”. Once this is done, restart the computer to check the problem fixed.

Hope this will address your query.

That was actually the first thing I checked. All drivers are working correctly. My mouse worked correctly too in the 2.0 port right up until the system rebooted after the updates were installed.

In addition I can't use my printer or my phone in those ports either.

This wouldn't be an issue but I use 3 of 4 ports all the time and losing 2 is quite disappointing.

Any other ideas/suggestions?

Cheers!

Same problem here.  Everything says the USB ports are working fine and have all the latest drivers, etc.  All the ports work fine from BIOS & worked trouble free in Win7.  I found I can get the ports to work temporarily in Windows 10, if I go to device manager and reset the associated USB Hub, but if I boot from cold again the ports will not work as before.  Is there a proper fix for this?

Cheers.

Hi,

Apologize for delay in response.

Run hardware troubleshooter and check if it helps.

  1. Type Troubleshooting in search box and open it.
  2. Click on Hardware and Sound
  3. Click on Hardware and Devices.
  4. Follow the instruction.

I would suggest you to reinstall the USB drivers and check if it helps.

  1. Press Windows Key + X, and select Device Manager
  2. Expand the Universal Serial Bus Controllers section by clicking on the "+" sign.
  3. Uninstall each of the devices under the USB Controller section by right-clicking on each one, and then clicking Uninstall.
  4. Close the Device Manager and restart your computer. Windows will automatically re-install the USB controllers in your computer, without you having to do anything further. Your computer will now run USB devices properly.

Also update chipset drivers for USB for windows 10 from the manufacturer’s website.

Thanks.

Thanks for your response Anil, however I tried all this but it makes no difference, because there is nothing wrong with the hardware or drivers.  I have since stumbled upon a work-around that works for my system:

Go to power settings and disable "Fast Startup".  Reboot and all USB ports will work flawlessly.  I'm guessing that fast startup does not allow enough time to register all drivers or something.  Obviously this is a fault with the operating system.

Hope this helps somebody else with the same issues...

Cheers.

Why don't you admit it is a microsoft issue, I have the same thing happening to me, before you ask all my drivers are up to date and never had this issue in windows 7/8.  I have also noticed the touchscreen desktop services decides to disable itself whenever it feels like it, I have to manually enable and start, the USB I get yellow errors I have to uninstall then reboot to get them working, Microsoft you need to look into the issues people are telling you instead of it's our drivers etc etc, get a grip.

this is unmitigated ridiculous. after a windows update, many computer maybe all of them, have started to not working and Microsoft's answer is that your device can be defective or reinstall device driver from troubleshooting. Can it be a solution ? Now, many KVM switch's mouse do not work at least properly not working. We have assumed to have better answer from Microsoft but the answer comes in like try again later.

ASAP help.

We do not want to downgrade all operating systems because of this f..ng update or feature.

Thank you.

I've lost all outputs; no USB's, all 4 of my 2.0s and both 3.0s as well as both DVI and VGA outputs, no monitor, no mouse and no keyboard...I got nothing and all I'm getting is that my computer has experienced a hardware failure and that it's "2 years old".

Who the **** goes around buying PC's every damned year?  I've had machines last greater than 6-7 years and the VISTA laptop I'm typing this on is over 10 years old.

Yep, I got a hardware failure the the same night/morning after MS pushed the latest OS updates...yep, I fell off a turnip truck yesterday...uh huh, sure.

Sure would be nice if they'd cram a fix for all of this down our throats instead of this abominable driver screwup mess for once.

OWN it MS and fix the mess you've created.

I endorse most of BarryLS's post as I have a 10 year old computer which has worked almost faultlessly since day 1 on VISTA, upgraded to Windows 7, and now Windows 10.

Suddenly last week I too have lost all USB 2.0 ports. My recently installed 3.0 ports are working, thank goodness. This cannot be coincidence, so I agree, admit something is wrong MS and fix the problem.
