Windows 10 update failing

Windows is attempting to install a feature update for windows 10 version 1093. After downloading the update it start the actual update and fails after 35% complaining about a problem with AVG. I get this 'what needs your attention' window with the message that AVG Antivirus needs to be uninstalled because it's not compatible with windows 10. Problem is that I don't have AVG installed so there is nothing to uninstall!

After many attempts I finally installed AVG hoping that by uninstalling it, it would clear whatever is bothering the Windows Update...but no luck

What can I do to solve this...and don't suggest I need to redo a full install.

Thanks

Paul

Hi Paul,

This was a known issue with a non-Installed Avira Anti-virus a while back and this fix should also work for this AVG bug also . . .

Click the link below to download a zip file

https://aka.ms/AppRPS

Unzip that file

Double click appraiser.bat to run that batch file

That batch will find the blocking file - delete the blocking file

Then try running the update again . . .

Hi DaveM121 ,

Thanks for your reply. If downloaded the suggested file, unzipped it and ran the bat file. I got a lot of red statements which are errors I presume. This where my attempts

1) AVG not installed. Additionally I went through the registry and removed anything that resembled AVG. The powershell still gave errorsand suggeted one directory where AVG might be located. There was no folder name and using the numeric value to open it failed.

Running the windows update after that changed nothing still the AVG problem.

2) Accessing the folder provided in the log file aka.ms/avg18_3win10 in went on to install AVG free. This worked. Applying the windows update still retain the error that AVG require attention.

Running the script again it now through more error (4 now and 1 when AVG was not installed). These are the errors:

Hi Paul

I am an independent advisor here to help

This is actually a common issue with this update

I would recommend that you start by working through the steps in the guide below
Moderator edit: Removed malvertising link.

Note: This is a non-Microsoft website. The page appears to be providing accurate, safe information. Watch out for ads on the site that may advertise products frequently classified as a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Products). Thoroughly research any product advertised on the site before you decide to download and install it.

Same Problem I am having too. I do not have the AVG either

But a friend sent AVGclear.exe, just in case if there were vestiges

of AVG in my PC. I ran it in a safe mode repeatedly to make sure.

But still the Update 1903 quits installing after 35% and insists that

AVG Antivirus needs to be uninstalled.

My question is why Microsoft is not aware of this stupid conundrum

and fixes it?

Shree

I think you may have misunderstood the problem. He is not having an issue with installing AVG, the problem is that the latest Windows 10 update claims that AVG is incompatible with Windows 10 and says AVG needs to be uninstalled.  Even after uninstalling AVG Windows 10 won't update. The link you provided only offers steps for fixing a problem installing AVG, not installing the latest Windows 10 update.

For what it’s worth, I used the AVGClear utility and then I was able to apply the update.

The version of AVGClear.exe that I used is version 19.6.4546.0

Sorry, I misstated that I used AVGCleaner and not AVGClear.

I too have used AVGclear.exe following a normal uninstall of AVG Free. Windows Update for 1903 still refuses to instal. I've also removed all references to AVG from the Registry and, again, with no effect. This is ridiculous Microsoft!!

Hi Pauken,

I performed exact same steps multiple times and...still the update is complaining about AVG needing attention. Stuck in a stupid loop. If the update is capable of detecting something (if legit) it should be able to provide a real solution.
