windows 10 update error message

Hi,

I have the following error message when I go windows update in settings -

"Your device is at risk because it’s out of date and missing important security and quality updates. Let’s get you back on track so Windows can run more securely. Select this button to get going:"

It is a nuisance, but does not seem to stop me getting quality updates, the latest installed was  (KB4486458) recently.

I had to defer Feature updates some time ago, as the big fall update 1709 will not install on my HP probook.

But the quality updates are fine.

This is just a nuisance, can you advise me what to do. I have tried to clear the update cache, but couldnt do this.

I am a bit of a novice at this sort of thing.

Hello,

I'm Independent Advisor and Microsoft MVP, here to help you with your question.

Please run Windows Update troubleshooter from Settings app > Update & security > Troubleshoot. See if it works.

If that doesn't work, try this:

Open administrative Command Prompt and type following commands one-by-one followed by Enter key.

net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc
net stop bits
net stop msiserver
Ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
Ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old
net start wuauserv
net start cryptSvc
net start bits
net start msiserver

Close Command Prompt and see if Windows Updates works then.

Let us know if this helps!

The problem has now come back again, along with the update problem I thought I had got rid of!

Windows update 1709 will not work on my hp laptop , I have spent so many hours trying to do it, and it just will not work.  So I used to defer quality updates by using advanced options in settings, but the buttons for current branch and number of days is now greyed out.  So I cannot get any updates without risking my computer being tied up for up to 9 hours at a time for no reward!. I would like to be able to get security updates at least.

Is there any advice you can give me?

Hello Tina,

If you like, you could try using the Windows 10 Update Assistant from Microsoft to directly update to the latest version of Windows 10 when you have the available time.

I have tried this way, it still does not work.

I also have tried to hide the update by downloading wushowhide, this says it is hidden when I do it, but then when I look on updates, its still there.

You could try resetting Windows Update again to remove the update.

If I do this to reset update, will it immediately start to download updates, or will I have a chance to defer feature updates before it starts, as  I don't want it to try to download 1709 again?
