Windows 10 update 2004 crashes when installing with error 0xc0000005

I have tried to install update 2004 and every time I try to install it , I get an error 0xc0000005 after it gets to 92% in the installation process. I have tried everything I can think of to fix this error. I ran the windows update trouble shooter and it found no problems. I ran a chkdsk and found no errors. I tried DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth  and it didn't help. Tried sfc /scannow and it found no errors. I have tried deleting my softwaredistribution folder and that didn't help. My computer runs fine with no problems and windows update will do all other updates with no errors.

Anyone know why I get this error and how to fix it?

Hi John,
I am Sumit, an Independent Advisor and a 3 year Windows Insider MVP here to help.

It is advisable to wait as version 2004 has many bugs which may be leading to the update failure.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/releas...

Try updating to 2004 using Media Creation tool and if it fails, share the logs.

The fastest way to get the upgrade is through Media creation tool or ISO file.
Please download Media Creation Tool from the link below and select Upgrade this PC at the first screen.
https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=691209

All steps, including upgrading using ISO file and Media creation tool, are covered here:
https://www.yourwindowsguide.com/2020/05/featur...
Content on the above blog is written by a Microsoft MVP so it is safe.

Meanwhile, if the update fails with MCT as well.

Let us check the Installation log to find why the update failed. Please share the logs as mentioned in this article. You should use a File sharing service like Onedrive or Media Fire to upload files and share the link in the next reply.

The Panther logs. Files named Setupact.log and Setuperr.log from the following path C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Panther

The Rollback logs: These usually are created if Windows Update rolls back. Files named Setupact.log and Setuperr.log from the following path C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Rollback

[Only if the error code is 0xC1900101-0x30018] The Device Install Log from C:/$Windows.~bt\Sources\Rollback\setupapi\setupapi.dev.log

As the log size might be large consider zipping before uploading.

The update failed using the media creation tool with no error, but it got to the end saying system will reboot and it never rebooted. I will send a link to my log files.

Ah, that is a new one. It looks to be an access violation. Because the 2004 documentation isn't available yet, I am not sure what exactly I should advise.

First, uninstall Norton, put the computer in clean boot and try again.

There are a couple of things I notice.  But first, the log entry just before it starts the FatalErrors is

2020-06-06 10:14:25, Info                  SP     BFSVC: Reopening system store.

--------------------------------------------

There are quite a few instances of files needing to be renamed.  It appears that process does not finish and needs to do it later.  You might look those over and see if anything makes any sense..  If you can open the Setupact.log with a text editor then look for the following line and below..

2020-06-06 10:14:24, Info                  SP     SPValidateTrackedContent: Pending file rename operations:

One of the folders mentioned is empty on my system..

c:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\clicktorun\backup

But like Sumit, it is the first time I have seen the indications you are showing..  What I mention may not be the actual cause the problem..

I will continue to look through your log to see if I can find something which occurred earlier that caused the Rollback, but it will take me some time..

I tried a clean boot and the installation still failed. This is the first time that I ever had a problem with any windows update or upgrade. I have 3 other computers that were able to do the 2004 update and they were much older computers.

John, if you want to investigate the errors Sumit is showing, we can do a couple of things.

The log shows the install is going to $Windows.~BT\NewOS\Windows\System32\config\BCD-Template.  After that it tries to Reopen the System store and the errors start.

The BCD-Template is what an install uses to set up the Boot files.  You can see part of the BCD Store if you open an admin command prompt and type bcdedit.  That will show a couple of the entries but there are several more.

If you still show the folder referenced, you can check it for the file to see if it is there.  If the folder was removed during the Rollback, you might check the original one in the Windows\System32\config folder.

Right now, two things I would like to see are the BCDedit listing (copy and paste) and a picture of your Disk Management window made with the snipping tool and attached.

Thanks Saltgrass. The BCD-Template was missing in the $windows folder, but was in the system32\config folder. Here is the link to the files you want. https://1drv.ms/f/s!ABfcAMHF3G8Hew

Ok, then I suppose my next question is for you to describe your drive configuration and where you think the OS really is.  The line from you log is below and it seems to be referring to the $Windows.~BT folder which is on the 236 GB partition on Disk 2..

Opening template from \Device\HarddiskVolume11\$WINDOWS.~BT\NewOS\WINDOWS\System32\config\BCD-Template.

If you have cloned a drive, such as the 260 GB to the 1 TB, it appears the recovery partitions are on the smaller drive.  Have you given any thought of removing the other drives except for your active Win 10 install?

It might be interesting to see the listing produced by a reagentc /info command to clear up where you actual recovery partition is..

Your bcdedit listing is a little messed up in that the Windows Boot Manager should be identified by at least the partition.  Yours is not since it doesn't have the line you see below, which is how mine shows.
