Windows 10 System Image & File History

On Windows 10 the system image and file history still appear to be broken as they were in Windows 8.1. Despite having more than enough space on my external hard drive, I get an error message. My system normally takes up about 200GB because I have used AOMEI to do a system image. It does produce a file at the end. Whether it would be useful I don't know. As for the file history that has never worked since Windows 8.1. But that is easier to get around by simply copy and pasting libraries to your external hard drive. But would be nice if I had a system where it just adds the new files on, without having backup the old stuff again.ImageImage ImageImage

  1. What is the complete error message you get?

Well I have, still have the same problem. My backup falls to complete with the same error message, as originally reported above. Is this ever going to be fixed? My pc is fully up to date.

Hello Darren,

We appreciate the time and effort you have put in to resolve the issue. Let me assist you with additional information from here to resolve the issue for once and all.

Now, since you have mentioned that this issue has been persisting since Windows 8 in your computer, I suspect that the problem continued even in Windows 10 because the core system files and services has been corrupt.

I suggest you to refer to the below methods and check if it helps to resolve the issue.

Method 1

Perform a Reset of the operating system and check if it helps to resolve the issue.

Resetting lets you choose whether to keep your files or remove them, and then reinstalls Windows. To get started, go to Settings > Update & security > Reset this PC >Get started and choose an option.

Option

Keep my files

What it does
  • Reinstalls Windows 10 and keeps your personal files.

  • Removes apps and drivers you installed.

  • Removes changes you made to settings.

  • Removes any apps your PC manufacturer installed. (If your PC came with Windows 10, apps from your PC manufacturer will be reinstalled.)

Option

Remove everything

What it does
  • Reinstalls Windows 10 and removes all your personal files.

  • Removes apps and drivers you installed.

  • Removes changes you made to settings.

  • Removes any apps your PC manufacturer installed. (If your PC came with Windows 10, apps from your PC manufacturer will be reinstalled.)

If you're planning to donate, recycle, or sell your PC, use this option and choose to fully clean the drive. This might take an hour or two, but it makes it harder for other people to recover files you've removed.

Option

Restore factory settings

What it does
  • Reinstalls the version of Windows that your PC came with (either Windows 8 or Windows 8.1) and removes your personal files.

  • Removes apps and drivers you installed.

  • Removes changes you made to settings.

  • Reinstalls any apps your PC manufacturer installed on your PC.

This option isn't available on all PCs.

Ref: Recovery options in Windows 10

Note All of your personal files will be deleted and your settings will be reset. All apps that you installed will be removed. Only apps that came with your PC will be reinstalled.

Method 2

Perform an Automatic Repair of the system and check if it helps.

Automatic Repair is a Windows recovery tool that can fix certain system problems that might prevent Windows from starting. Automatic Repair scans your computer for the problem and then tries to fix it so your computer can start correctly. Run Automatic repair and check the issue status.

Create Windows 10 ISO: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Please follow the below steps to perform the repair for the computer.

a) Insert the Installation Disk into the disk drive of the computer. Press any key from the keyboard when prompted to.

b) Follow the instructions till the Install Now screen and then Click Repair your computer.

c) Click Advanced Options.

d) Click Troubleshoot.

e) Click Automatic Repair.

f) Follow the on screen instructions.

Method 3

Perform a Repair Upgrade to reinstall Windows 10 over the existing installation of Windows 10 on your hard disk.

Refer to the below Microsoft Help Article created by one of our MVPs, Andre da Costa.

How to: perform a repair upgrade using the Windows 10 ISO file

Hope it helps this time.

Thank you.

My computer has been reset since windows 10 installation. I had a restart loop with the desktop back in September. So I used the reset. To re install Windows. It did not cure the backup and restore problem.

For the other suggestion. I don't have a CD-R-RW burner.

Hi Darren,

Thank you for posting your reply and updating on the status.

I would like to inform that we can create an installation media for Windows 10 using a USB stick (pen drive). So I request you to create an USB installation media and perform the automatic repair by following the steps provided by Sayan_Ghosh in the previous post.

Keep us posted on the status for further assistance.
