windows 10 sound only works during troubleshooting

So yesterday everything was working fine on my pc, but when I booted up today, my speakers weren't producing any sound. 

 No apps produce any sound, and even windows itself can't (when I tried to adjust the loudness of my speakers, I don't hear the ping I would normally hear). I've read through similar threads, but none happen to have the same situation I'm in. The only time the speakers produce any sound is during troubleshooting when it plays a test sound, I can hear it. After that it pops up a menu with options to rate the sound, and if you even heard it - I've tried every single option there and nothing seems to work. I've also tried to update the audio drivers, however, it said I already have the latest drivers for my device. Nothing I found online seems to help. 

In summary: neither windows nor any apps can play sound, but I've tried troubleshooting and it does play a sound and doesn't notice any problems, so I know it's not a hardware issue.

I'm on an Acer laptop running windows 10, if it helps.

You can try to reset your app volume and device preferences by
1. typing sound settings in search
2. in advanced sound options click App volume and device preferences
3. Click Reset,

So it kind of worked, some app sounds play normally, others don't and the windows sounds are very distorted

Also in the advanced sound settings menu, it shows system sounds, and the icon is changing from muted to normal

You said you only tried to update drivers.

Have you tried to uninstall your audio drivers.

reboot PC. Windows will automatically detect and install audio drivers.

Is "uninstall device" the same as "uninstall drivers" because I don't see "uninstall drivers"
