Windows 10 SmartScreen- "check apps and files" options greyed out

In Windows Defender settings the options for "check apps and files" are greyed out.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

I am running Windows 10 Pro X64, Version 1703, OS Build 15063.296

Hi Hairy,

Windows Defender will be automatically disabled if there's a third party security application installed on your computer. For us to diagnose the issue, we would like to know if you have a third party security app installed on your computer.

We look forward to your response.

As far as I know Version 1703, OS Build 15063.296 is the latest.

If there is a newer version, where can I find it?

Hi Hairy,

Thank you for giving us an update. Before we proceed with the next troubleshooting steps, we'd like to collect more information to know how we can deliver the best resolution to your concern. Kindly answer the following:

  • Did you install new programs or updates before getting this problem in Windows Defender?
  • Were you previously using a different security software on the PC?

If a third-party antivirus program was previously running on the computer, it's possible that it wasn't removed completely. If that is the case, we suggest getting the corresponding uninstaller for the third-party software you were using before. Once all traces of the old program have been removed, see if the options will be available when using Defender.

Keep us updated so we can assist you further if necessary.

Regards.
