Windows 10 random black screen hang

Greetings,

As said in the title, I'm experiencing windows hang issue with black screen and I need help about it. It seems to occur at random since I can't replicate the hang. When it happened, the screen turns black, no signal on the monitor, but the audio still plays, the LED debug on my motherboard still show AO, num lock still responsive (I press it on and off), caps lock too, and after about a minute, the audio starts to crash (plays a loop af the last "frame"), num lock unresponsive, and then the system restart. Sometimes I can boot normally after the restart, sometimes it happened when it's still boot (past the enter BIOS window, and just when it seems like to boot normally, the screen turns black again).

My System:

  • Processor: Intel i7 8700K

  • Motherboard: Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Ultra

  • Memory: Corsair Vengeance Pro 2x8GB 3000Mhz

  • Graphics Card: MSI RTX 3070 Ti Gaming X

  • Storage

    • SSD M.2 NVMe Apacer AS2280P4U 512 GB - System

    • SSD SATA 2.5" Samsung 870 EVO 2 TB - Storage

    • WD Blue HDD 7200 RPM 1 TB - Storage

  • PSU: FSP Hydro G Pro 1000W Gold

The issue randomly happened while:

  • Playing game on steam, screen turns black, and it happened

  • just navigating in file explorer, copying files, opening folders, etc.

  • When it happened once, there are times when I enter the BIOS, and just as I navigating the BIOS, finding what I can do, it happened again, and restarts

  • While reinstalling apps

What I already did to attempt to fix it is:

  • disconnect all storage drive except the system SSD, and boot it. the issue still remains

  • disconnect the Graphic Card, boot with only system ssd connected, with on board graphics. The issue still remains

  • Finally tried to reinstall Windows. the problem seems to be gone. As I was updating Windows, reinstalling drivers, and apps and software that I need, it happened again after about 5 hours of stable

  • This screenshot is when it happened after I reinstall Windows

Please help me to figure out what is wrong with my system

Thank you in advance

Hi AbimanyuWidiadana.

Welcome to the Microsoft Community.

Your computer is experiencing frequent black screens. Based on your description, it appears that your computer does not experience this problem after a complete reinstallation until you install other software and the problem reappears. It is likely that the black screen is caused by third-party software that you have installed.

You can troubleshoot other software by going into Safe Mode, where all third party services/startup items are not loaded, by doing the following:

1. Press and hold shift and use Restart in the start button to restart and enter WinRE. (If you can't use the start menu, press and hold the power button to turn off the computer, then press the power button to turn it on again. (If you can't use the start menu, press and hold the power button to turn off the computer, then press the power button to turn on.)

2. Click Troubleshooting - Advanced Options - Startup Settings option.

3. Click the Restart button.

4. Select the safe mode environment in which you want to start Windows 10 (F4).

If the black screen doesn't appear after some time in Safe Mode, then the interference is caused by a third-party service startup item. You may need to go back to normal boot mode to try to disable some services/startup items.

(Disclaimer: A “clean boot” starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. It helps to determine whether a background service is interfering with your game or program and to isolate the cause of a problem. These steps of "clean boot" might look complicated at first glance. However, to avoid any trouble for you, please follow them in order and step-by step so that it will help you get back on track.)

1. Reboot your computer back to normal mode, press Win+R, then type msconfig and click OK.

2. Click on Services above and then check the Hide all Microsoft services checkbox below. Be sure to check this checkbox or disabling some Microsoft services may cause serious problems.

3. Disable all Services using Disable All and click OK. Restart your computer to see if the problem exists. If the problem does not exist, then the problem is with the service you just disabled.

4. Repeat 1 and 2, then select Turn on some of the services (half is recommended) and click OK. Restart the computer and see if the problem exists. If the problem does not exist, then the problem is with the service that was not enabled earlier.

5. Perform step 4 for the remaining services until the problem appears. This proves that the problem is in the service that was just enabled. Continue with similar troubleshooting to learn the exact location of the problem.

If the problem persists after completing step 3, it is possible that the problem is caused by a system self-startup item, which you can troubleshoot in the following ways:

1. Keep all services closed. Press Windos+R, then type msconfig and click OK.

2. Click Startup above and then click Open Task Manager.

3. Disable each startup item, try to remember the ones you disabled, you can take a picture to save the information.

4. Go back to Configuration Information and click OK or Apply.

5. Shut down your computer and restart it. See if the problem exists.

6. Find the specific startup item that is causing the problem as described above for Services.

With the above method, you can pinpoint the service/startup item you need to disable.

Good luck in solving your problem.

Hello Raylan,

Yes, I suspect that too because the problem reappears after I perform Windows update, restart it, and then installing other apps that I usually use.

Thank you for the instruction too. I will start doing that and see if I can find the cause of the problem. As this seems to be a very long process, I will update the result once I find something

Hello, I come here after about a week of doing the thing to isolate what possibly causes my random black screen,

First, I do a safe mode boot, and leave it for hours and it seems there are no problems.

and as I want to start doing the "clean boot" steps a day after I tried the safe mode boot, my PC suddenly have black screens right at the starts. So I can't see what my PC is doing after I turned it on. The system seems fine, the debug code shows AO, my caps lock and num lock was working fine.

then once again, I try to disconnect my graphics card and plug my monitor into the onboard graphics and the problem is still there. No screen at all but the system seems to be working. After that, I plug my Graphics Card again, this time on the second pcie slot. still no screen.

Some days later, I finally manage to borrow my borther's Graphics Card and use that Graphics Card and then my system boots normally. It's MSI GTX 1650 Super Ventus. The problem suddenly gone. And when I try to boot with my on board graphics again, it worked now. The screen is not black. That was on January 20th, so it's been about 2 days as I post this reply, so far no black screens.

Now, I don't know what causes the black screen but I suspect my Graphics Card is what causing it. But I'm confused as to why it affected my on board graphics too. But when I plug other graphics card, suddenly my on board graphics is working again. I checked the BIOS settings, my on board graphics is set to enabled.

So I think my problem is solved? my GPU is the cause.

But, if the problem reappears I guess I will try the "clean boot" again

I was having this issue too, it would annoy me and I had no clue what to do, and I just checked nvidia drivers, and there was a new one that came out march 5th 2025, and in the fixes it says pc randomly boots to a black screen. I am currently updating my drivers and wanted to share this information, I hope it can fix both of our problems 🤞
