Windows 10 PRO unable to switch users

I haven't been able to find any suitable fix for this on line, so hopefully someone can help out. On my PC I have my admin account, and three other family user accounts. All options to switch user were working until a few days ago, but have now disappeared, so we are unable to switch between users.

At the windows lock screen only my account and password box appears. From the Start menu, clicking on my icon only brings up Change Account Settings, Signout and Lock. Signing out doesn't make any difference, the other accounts still do not appear. Also I can only login to my admin account using my Microsoft account password, not the local password.

All the accounts are enabled, and I've tried various settings recommended online (amend registry settings, Local Users and Groups etc), but none have worked. Any ideas what might have caused this and what else I can try?

Hi Tevita, thanks for the reply, I had already found this guide and I tried both fixes, but it didn't make any difference. What else can I try?

Thanks

Hi Gnomad01,

Thanks for getting back to me.

Please try the following to fix this issue:

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/insider/for...

Could you please confirm whether if this a personal computer or a company computer, if it's a company machine most likely blocked by group policy.

So if adding to local admin group and elevating it via cmd doesn't work. Please follow guide below to fix it via group policy or edit registry.

https://www.technipages.com/windows-10-enable-o...

Let me know how you get on.

Hi Tevita

This is a personal computer, and switch user has been working fine until very recently.

I tried your second link to fix via group policy or edit registry; in both cases Fast User Switching is Enabled.

I read through the post in your first link, but I'm not sure what was actually done to fix the problem. It looks like reformatting the partition and installing various Win10 builds, but this seems a bit overkill to me and I feel uncomfortable with these drastic measures. I'm sure there must be a simpler solution.

If not, I can have a go at the above, but would need some guidance if possible.

Thanks

Gnomad

Hi Gnomad01,

If you have tried, local group policy, registry, command line and user admin groups and none of those solutions works. If your willing to through Windows recovery or Windows 10 rebuild I will give you a few suggestions

1. Firstly you need to back up your files (data), follow this guide:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17127/...

2. System Restore: If none of the other solutions works, please try a system restore:

https://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-system-r...

3. Thirdly: If none of the other 2 works, try Windows recovery follow guide below:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12415/...

4. If none of the other solution works, try repairing Windows:

https://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-startup-...

Please let me know if those solutions works, if not I will guide to the next solution which is rebuilding Windows 10, put please before doing anything back up your files (data) really important.

Hi Tevita

I tried the Reset your PC option, and that has worked. I now have restored the ability to switch users. I will have to reinstall all the apps we have installed, but at least switch user is working.

Thanks for your help
