Windows 10: No sound with DisplayPort

Hi community,

after upgrading my Intel NUC D34010WYK  from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 I get no more sound. Connected to the NUC is a monitor with built-in speakers, the cable is a DisplayPort cable. With Windows 8.1, there were no sound problems.

The device manager of Windows 10 shows two devices under "Sound, video and game controllers" - Intel Display Audio and Realtek High Definition Audio, but no errors. When I right-click the speaker icon and choose "playback devices" (I do not know if "playback devices" is the correct term as the language of my Windows installation is German), the "Intel Display Audio" is marked as default. When I play some music, I even can see the level indicator going up and down, but I hear no sound.

I tried the most current drivers from Intel's website but that did not help. When I change the bit rates in the advanced section of the playback device's properties, I sometimes get sound, but after a reboot, there is no sound any more.

Please, can anybody help me?

Hi,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

I understand that you’re facing issues with sound after upgrading to Windows 10 I will make sure to help you

with this issue.

What is the make and model of the computer?

Check the Device status in the Device Manager. The yellow exclamation mark provides an indication of a device's current status and could mean that there is a system resource conflict, a driver issue, or any number of other things. Refer to these steps to open Device Manager.

1. Press Windows and X keys together.

2. Click on Device Manager.

3. Expand Sound, video and game controller.

I would suggest you to try the below steps and check if it helps:

a. Right click on the speaker icon which is on the bottom right corner.

b. Click on playback devices.

c. under playback tab highlight speakers\headphones

d. then Click on properties

e. select Advanced tab

f. then Click on Restore to default

If the issue persist then I would suggest you try the steps from the below Microsoft help article:

No sound in Windows

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-IN/windows/no-sound-help#no-sound=windows-8&v1h=win8tab1&v2h=win7tab1&v3h=winvistatab1&v4h=winxptab1

Hope this information helps and let us know the status of the issue we will be glad to help you further.

Regards,
Yaseer.

Hi Mohammed,

make and model: Intel NUC D34010WYK.

The device manager of Windows 10 shows two devices under "Sound, video and game controllers" - one is "Intel Display Audio", the other is "Realtek High Definition Audio". There are no yellow exclamation marks and no other signs that would indicate an error - both devices show "This device is working properly".

I already restored the playback devices to default but that did not help. As you can see in my first post, even the level indicator is going up and down when I play some music, but no sound comes out of the monitor's built-in speakers. The playback level is switched to 100.

I followed the steps from the Microsoft help article "No sound in Windows" that you mentioned but that did not lead to success.

Gruß, Carsten

Hi Carsten,

Thank you for the update.

Perform System restore to an earlier date and check if it helps.

  1. Right-click (or press and hold) the Start button, and then select Control Panel.

  2. Search Control Panel for Recovery.

  3. Select Recovery > Open System Restore > Next.

  4. Choose the restore point related to the problematic app, driver, or update, and then select Next > Finish.

Do get back to us for any issues pertaining in the future. We will be happy to help.

Hi Jessen,

unfortunately, there is no restore point.

If I remember correctly, there has never been sound since the upgrade to Windows 10 (okay, there were some individual cases when I got sound (see my first post), but after a restart of the computer, the sound is gone). So even if there were some restore points, I would not have known to which to revert to as the sound problem seems to be a fundamental problem, at least with my computer.

I changed the audio quality to 24 Bit (Studio-Quality), Sound is ok!

Switching back to 16 Bit: No sound (like before).

Set to 24 Bit again: Sound perfect!

Reboot: Sound is still good.

(Surface pro 3, Win10, LG Ultra-Wide, Displayport to Displayport, all up to date).

Sounds strange, but this worked for me, hope this helps others too.

Regards,

Ulf

Hello.

This also helped me, changing to 24 bit (studio quality) but to 96000 Hz, other settings even for 24 bits did not work.

Regards.

I already tried switching bitrates and resolutions, and yes, it worked - sometimes (non-reproducible why and when), and it usually did not survice a reboot.

Meanwhile I decided to ignore this problem, instead bought a separate speaker set and connected it to the 3.5mm jack. No more problems with audio since then.
