Windows 10 - No music files play, player freezes/crashes

Hi -

So since a recent update, music files (I usually use mp3 but have tested flac and aiff) won't play at all - pretty much the same result in iTunes, Groove, and anything else that comes to hand.  In iTunes (I use that the most) the track sticks at 0.00, the player freezes, and eventually I have to go to task manager and shut it down.  In Groove, it just freezes, spinning wheel, again, I have to go task manager etc.  I also tried flac with another player, same deal.

No other music or sound functionality seems to be affected, I can watch (and listen to) movies etc fine, I can update my iPod, put music on my phone, no problem.  It's just that audio playback seems to crash whatever player is being used.

Any ideas?  And please understand, I am a tech dummy, use simple, childish language!

Hi Wyndham,

Thank you for being part of Microsoft Community.

If you suspect the issue occurred after Windows updates, I would request you to perform a System Restore prior to the installation of Windows updates and then check if it helps.

  1. Right-click (or press and hold) the Start button, and then select Control Panel.

  2. Search Control Panel for Recovery.

  3. Select Recovery > Open System Restore > Next.

  4. Choose the restore point related to the problematic app, driver, or update, and then select Next > Finish.

Do get back to us for any issues pertaining in the future. We will be happy to help.

Hi - that seems to have worked, thanks.

But, a follow-up question - the update that seemed to cause this also put Flash out of action.  Now both these issues seem to be resolved.  So how do I know if these issues are resolved with later updates?  Can I istop updates completely?  Or do I have to do this every time?

Many thanks for your help.

Hi Wyndham,

Glad to know that the issue is fixed.

I would request you to provide the KB(Knowledge Base) number of that Windows update.

Since system restore the updates awaiting installation are:

KB3124200

KB3132372

KB3133431

(settings seems to suggest these will be automatically installed.  I've set updates to 'Notify', will this stop installation altogether?  I don't want to switch my computer back on and find myself back at square one)

Thanks,

DW

Edited to add - since system restore Windows also seems to have security issues - I tried to order something through PayPal but it wouldn't work as the site couldn't be verified, although it worked fine on another Windows PC.  Is there a way around this? (sorry for question deluge)
