Windows 10 network's proxy settings

Having bought a new W10 laptop i find i cannot access the web. I have a confirmed secure wireless internet connection. The screen message "Windows could not automatically detect this network's proxy settings" appears. Also, Internet Explorer browser has not materialised? Using my "old" laptop, i see there are several on-line possible "solutions" suggested, but with doubtful/dangerous results. As the laptop is brand new i am loath to try any suggestions and have returned same for a refund (JL!). Have i just been unlucky or could the same scenario occur with a second new purchase? I would welcome views.

Thank you, KT.

Hi,

The first thing to do is to check the Internet options and make sure Proxy Server is unchecked.

If you use Internet Explorer: Internet Explorer -> Tools -> Options -> Connections Tab -> LAN settings.

If you use Firefox:  Firefox -> Tools -> Options ->Advanced Connections -> Settings.

There should be either use system proxy settings or no proxy.

The second thing is to check for malware. You should use special software for this purpose, for example, Malwarebytes or AdwCleaner.

You final step is to run the command netsh winsock reset in an elevated command prompt, then reboot the computer and check. If it doesn't help, try the command netsh int ipv4 reset.

If you are interested in increasing your online anonymity, you can also directly connect your router to a VPN. I think that Virtual Private Network is much more efficient.

Hi. GabriellaLynn.

Thank you for your suggestions. As i put in my initial post, the new laptop did not produce a browser icon in the taskbar. All that appeared were a number of apps on the screen.

Anyway, thanks again for your time.

KT
