Windows 10: Logon stuck on progress circle after successful install.

Hi,

After what appeared to be a successful install/upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1(in maybe 30 minutes), I entered my creds and it looked to be logging in, but has stopped with the spinning progress circle. I can hit Control-Alt-Delete to get options to Restart, Shutdown, etc. Those do not help. It goes straight to progress circle when it comes up. I let it run all night with no change.

Is there a SafeMode or some other options to either troubleshoot or back out?

The PC is a year old Dell XPS 8700 with 8 GB RAM, 256 SSD, I-7 proc. 8.1 booted in about 1 second! Not kidding! The 8.1 install is fairly new with very few apps installed. It has a wired gigabit connection (or can go wireless).

Thanks!

Mark

I am having the exact same problem. Can't access SafeMode or boot menu.

I tried calling their local support hotline but it's a Saturday and no one will be able to help. A few minutes ago, HP automatically updated the BIOS. Was hoping it would fix the problem but I'm still stuck on the loading screen.

Okay it just worked! Checked on Reddit (my savior) and apparently wifi usb's are crashing login screens. Anyways, I unplugged my usb wifi adapter and it let me through!

I'm not using any type of USB WiFi adapter. Also, nothing is plugged in except for the power cable. Will check Reddit, though. Thanks!

Hi All,

The only way I found to fix the issue was to do a reset, saving personal data. Now I have a clean install. I prefer that with a new OS anyway.

I believe the issue was with the NVIDIA desktop ê experience.

I would recommend uninstalling that type of software proper to upgrading.

(Copying my answer from another thread.)

First a question for you: did you have any VPN software installed on your machine before upgrade? Like Cisco AnyConnect for example?

For your information: I had the same issue from a WIn8.1 upgrade and was able to get it working. Here is exactly what I did:

  • Boot to advanced menu:
    • On spinning wheel screen hit CTRL+ALT+DELTE
    • Hold shift and click Power button then Restart while keeping shift key pressed
  • Under boot menu select the option to revert to previous build
  • Trigger the Win10 upgrade process once more

Once the second upgrade attempt completed I was finally able to login in Win10. However the spinning wheel issue persists when booting in safe mode.

Also uninstalling the VPN software altogether before upgrade may yield better results.
